Ok I am the second owner of a 98 Ford Explorer Sport. When I bought the truck, the guy told me that if the OEM tires (Goodyear) where not bought everytime, the ABS light turned on and would not work. He said that the computer system picked up on the fact the tires where not the same. Therefor, he always bought Goodyear.
Have any of you guys heard of this? I have heard the truck can pick up on different diameter tires but not on the make? I would rather not buy a tire as expensive as Goodyear, if I do not have to.

That's a load of crap. The truck has no idea what brand tires are going on it. Put whatever you want on it and there will be no problems. And for the record, Goodyear's aren't that great and not one of the most expensive.

The important part is that the tires on each axle be the same diameter. If you have Control Trac 4wd, you want all 4 tires to be the same diameter.

You can use any brand you want.

Agreed, you can use any tires you want with no trouble. I ran 31" tires for over 2.5 years with no trouble. Just be sure to have the same size tires on all 4 corners.

my ABS system was damaged during installation of the new tires... i don't know how, but that's the story i was given. anyway, this is my 5th set of tires, and the first time the ABS light came on...

There's no way the vehicle knows what brand of tire is on there. They simply need to be the same SIZE and DIAMETER as each other. You cannot replace the front or rear tires unless the others are relatively new.

The fella probably changed them 2 at a time. Either way, we know their is no tire "brand" sensor. Except this last time, I've never, in 3 Exs, had the ABS go on because the tires were changed - but I always change all 4 at once. But maybe whoever was changing his tires was damaging the ABS sensor somehow...
