1996 2wd 5.0 Explorer, ABS light is on. Where do i need to start looking to get it fixed?

ABS sensors, there's one in the rear axle... but because you're 2wd, I'm not familier with how your front is... with our 4wd we have one sensor in each hub assembly. It's most likely one of those sensors.
 






It also happens when the front brake pads wear thin. The sensors near the front rotors do something too. Changing front brake pads takes minutes and basic tools.

That big valve body under the hood isn't just for the rear brakes. You have front and rear ABS.

If the pads are still thick then check some of the threads here on how to bleed the system. It is part of normal maintenance anywho.
 






Unless you have a different sensor setup on your truck than a 4wd, I don't know of any type of sensor that triggers the ABS for thin pads. Would be nice though, as I've ran my pads down to the metal before.

As was stated, the problem is usually the ABS sensor
located on the rear diff. It attracts metallic debris
and tends to fail before the front sensors. They're
relatively cheap, more so than having the code
read at a dealer. (Takes an expensive one to read ABS codes).
