Hi all. My ABS light is on and I don't really know where to start in finding the problem. I've checked the fuse and it's okay, other than that can anyone point me in the right direction.

I guess you need someone to read the fault codes to identify the issue.

Mine recently was the rear sensor.

It would suggest that one of the abs sensors is showing a constant lock up and hence the light is on and the abs system is disabled. You could try cleaning the sensors. One in each front hub, you need to take the disc and rear shield off to get at it, and one on the top of the rear diff, which is easy to get to. They are all standard hall effect sensors ( a coil around a magnet) dirt and metal filings will upset them.

As you have a 99 x then if the speedo is working normally that would rule out the rear sensor as the same one is used for speed and abs.

Speedo works fine, so that must rule out that one. I need to replace the front discs anyway so I'll have a look when I get around to that. Is it possible to buy a code reader? Is it the same as the engine code reader that you can buy from a third party other than Ford? and where does it plug in?

Thanks for your help guys.

You can get an abs code reader but they are expensive (£150+). They can read the OBD II as well or you can get one that just reads the OBD for a lot less. The connector is next to the hood release under a cover plate. Make sure that is works for an Explorer. You can also get a connector to a laptop with software that allows for real time monitoring.
