I have a question about the front ABS sensor on a 93 Explorer. I had some front end work done on my explorer where they replaced the ABS sensors (long story). They sensors stick out about 1/2" from the backing plate, where as before I'm sure they were flush.

Can anyone tell me how their ABS sensors are positioned on their 91-94 Explorer?

Barry, I don't have access to my truck at this time, but as I recall the sensor was bolted to the rear of the backing plate. It did stick out from the back and it was held in place by a 12pt 5.5mm bolt I think.

It did seem like it stuck out the back though.

Thanks Rob

ignore this post......The first one I sounded like an idiot and I'm editing this one to at least look like I know what I'm doing.

uhh leebo. Abs sensor is for the anit lock brakes. Air bag sensors work by the inertial force when a car hits a wall and stops really quickly. I dont think the early explorers had airbags I know my 93 xlt doesnt, but I do have a door buzzer thing and the day I decided to unplug it because it was annoying me I left my head lights on and killed my battery.

Conflict of terms.....

Timeout....

Pre 95's - No Airbags.

ABS is the Anti-lock Bracking system. Before that it was the RABS ( ? ) or rear anti-lock or anti-skid system.

Anyway, The ABS is for brakes not Airbags.

Now about the Heads up display that was offered on the XLT's.... ( Just kidding )

can you say brain fart....I can.

The Abs sensor does stick out past the backing plate. There should also be an about 1"x1.5" piece that has a hole for the ABS sensor in it. This sits on the backing plate and the sensor sticks out slightly past that. All it is is a magnet and it needs to be pretty close to the pick up ring on the back of the rotor. As long as it isn't rubbing, I wouldn't worry.

har!

As it turns out there is a very simple solution to why the ABS light was coming on. Apparently there's this thing called "brake fluid" that needs to be topped up so that the sensor doesn't actuate.

Now the question is - where did the brake fluid go? Had the whole system checked, no leaks or anything. Could the off-roading, bouncing around, being tossed about affect the brake fluid level? Perhaps a cap not on tight? Hmm...

Barry some of the extreme angles I have been at have cause brake fluid to leak out. Otherwise I would bet there has to be a slight leak somewhere and your just not seeing it. Bummer!

As you wear down your pads, your fluid will get lower.
