I recently bought a 1993 explorer xlt and found that the front bearings were run loose for quite some time and spun on the spindle. I can't figure out how to remove the sensor thing (I don't know what it's called) for the ABS that is on the spindle. I took a bolt out of it from the outside of the backing plate, is there more? I used a slide hammer spindle puller and the side without the sensor moved, but the sensor side wouldn't budge.

Also, I will go junkyard shopping in the morning for another spindle, what different years and models (Ranger?) will have the spindle with the ABS that I need?

Please help the un-knowing, Thanks.

Also, what should I torque the spindle nut to (ft-lb)? It has the auto hubs and 1 nut with the pin that goes in the spindle keyway.

Did you get both bolts off the abs sensor?? I use a copper drift to gently tap out the abs rod. be careul cause if you deform the top it may be difficult to get back in. When I put the abs rod back in I coat it with wd40 and also the hole it goes into.

Nope, I had only one of them out, I didn't see the other one.

Thanks.

Will a spindle from a non-front abs explorer or bronco II work as far as the bearings and auto locking hubs being the same? I think I will unhook the abs and use a non-abs spindle if it is the same except for the abs notch.

There is a 12 point 6mm bolt behind the ABS sensor (I had to track down a Snap-On dealer to get a socker, Craftsman doesn't make one). You have to remove it before the sensor will slide off over the spindle. Trust me...I've done this more that I wish to count.

Find a Snap-On dealer and buy a 6mm 12 point 1/4" drive. It ran me about $8.00 but I had to have it!

It's the small bolt to the left!

Thanks for the pic. I used a 1/4" standard sae socket six point and it fit real tight and took it out. I guess I will go to the junkyard in the morning and get a non-abs spindle and throw it together with no abs, it's been in my garage for 3 weeks now and has to get out...

I also used a 1/4" starting out but it eventually wouldn't fit right.

Glad I could help. I also would like to toss my whole ABS system or find a way to disable it when off-roading.

Apparently the abs will not function with a sensor unhooked. Maybe you could splice into an abs wire and run that through a switch mounted in the cab, flip the switch and it will sense an "open" and stop functioning.

I am looking to just disable mine permanently.

Edit - On second thought the switch idea would suck, I think you may have to clear the codes from the computer every time you would use it.

Hmmm Chris I just did my ball joints on both sides and the bolt on the knuckle for me was a 12pt 10mm.
And the little one on the abs was an 8mm 6pt
