When set to Max AC or AC the compressor is fully engaged.
When set to off the compressor is disengaged.
When set to any other setting the compressor comes on for 10 seconds then turns off for 10 seconds

I have unpluged the pressure sensor on the evaporator this keeps the AC off all the time

This is killing my gas mileage but i do like to have AC on hot days but dont want to get under the hood every time. i just want it to work correctly.

any ideas? maybe the selector switch?

Hm not to sure, but ive noticed it doesnt really affect my gas mileage....i burn way more gas when i cruise with the windows all down so i prefer the ice cold ac LOL

Actually I have heard that it is normal for them to cycle, but every 10 seconds sounds a bit excessive. Every 10 seconds sounds like it is indeed cycling the normal rate for the A/C running. Is it an electronic or standard climate control?

Outside temp above freezing, and the compressor will cycle based on evaporator temp any time it's running. The compressor will run in any mode except floor or vent to dehumidify the incomming air. Below freezing it will not run. This keeps the cabin dry and the windows from fogging up on rainy days. Most newer systems operate this way, Auto climate control always runs that way.

I have the standard 3 knob climate control

Thanks didn't know that it ran all the time to dehumidify the air. kind of cool.

There must be some thing wrong with my compressor then. I normally get 17 miles to the gallon. I recently fixed all the holes in the system and recharged it. Now my MPG has droped to about 12 with the AC on and 15 with the knob set to some other setting and 17 with the knob set to off.

When ever the compressor is engaged the car seems a bit sluggish compared to not engaged.

Do i need a knew compressor?

Nope... I think that perhaps you don't understand your system. Your AC should NOT/ DOES NOT function when "Vent only" or "floor only" is selected.... that is "design intent" from ford and alot of other makers. IF yours is operating in those modes, your control switch is broken on your climate control area.
