Hi guys, Im having a major bad time with my '93 explorer truck lately and this seems like just the icing on the cake. Tire popped, radiator blew, battery died, flashers blew, blinkers blew, ciggarette lighter doesnt work, stereo got a cd stuck in it, the hood latch broke, and the bug deflector just decided to fall off.

I really dont care about the cosmetic details, I got the hood latch to work, and I replaced the blinker fuse. Tire patched, radiator replaced (I did it myself), fuses replaced. Battery jumped. Blah blah blah.

Problem now remains on the accelerator. I read some of the other posts on it, but it doesnt seem like Im having exactly the same problem.

I was turning at a red light, and I accelerated, hard, on a short strech of road, and the the gas pedal is stuck, the rpms and engine are going crazy, and Im having to ride the brakes. I get the truck off the road, get it in park, all the while really having to fight with it, and get it turned off.

Get the hood open, figure out where the throttle cable is, wiggle it to try and fix it, try to pry the accelerator up off the floor where its at, start the car back up, no dice. Rpms redline. Turn it off quickly and try again. No luck, the accelerator is way way closer to the floor than it should be, and I cant lift it back up to where it should sit.

Turn the truck back on, engine redlines, turn it off. I dont want to hurt the truck. Anymore than it already is anyway. I contemplate driving it home. Unfortunately, my transmission, being so old, takes a few seconds to engage, and with the engine racing, I dont want to risk ripping it out of the truck. Because that would be just the sort of thing to happen to me. Especially now that it seems like Ive pissed off the Explorer Gods.

So we leave it. I get a ride home from a friend, and go to sleep for about thirty minutes. And Ive already been up for twenty four hours. Im not in the mood to deal with it. But another friend comes in, wakes me up, and asks me where my truck is. And why Im home without it. I tell him what happened, and where Id left the truck, and he get all excited saying the cops are going to tow it, or its going to get stolen or vandilized. And that we have to go get it now.

So I agree. I dont like leaveing it there anymore than he did, probably less, so we ride out in his truck and get there. He asks what it does, I show him. We both agree that it cant be left there and Ill drive it home, and he'll follow me.

So I get in, get it turn on, and get it in drive as quickly as I can, standing on the brake. The rpms drop down thankfully, to about 3 1/2. The engine is still racing, and it wants to go. So I go. I get home, (I only live about five miles from where this happen, thankfully) and on the way home, I can smell the clutch or the brakes burning. Something. I dont know what, but I know it wasnt good. The exhaust was spouting a light grey smoke, pretty thickly, but not to heavily. Make sense?

I dont know if it makes a difference, but as I stated, its a 1993 Ford Explorer, stock, 4x4 truck. I hit about sixty five before I slowed down and realized the accelerator was stuck. I didnt slam the accelerator, but I did push down all the way and held it there. Stupid I know, but I was trying to prove a point. The only one I proved was that Ford stands for Fix or Repair Daily, as well as Found on Road Dead.

Great. Now, my question is, how do I fix this? Is the bolt thing, in place of the rivets going to work? Or, since I cant pull the accelerator back up into position, am I just going to accerbate the problem by trying to do that? Do I need to limp it to the mechanics, or can I do it myself?

havent dealt much with gas pedals, but it sounds to me a spring broke or vaccuum line which keeps pressure on the gas pedal, also could be your cable is bad. I had a cougar do the same thing, found the throttle cable was stuck on a vaccuum line.

I'm sorry to hear of your troubles. First, do not start the engine with the throttle stuck open, ever. You may have already done irreparable damage after the throttle stuck open.

My 93 Limited had a similar issue, and I never was able to fix it, I knew that I would not use it much longer. Mine only stuck open randomly by pressing fully to the floor, so I avoided that. It happened to me about 6-8 times total, and the first couple were shocking, what to do, hit the brakes yes.

It took me about five seconds the first time while riding the brakes, to think hitting the throttle again. The throttle let go after 3-4 attempts. I looked a couple of times for the sticking, but didn't find it. I figured that it would be in the throttle body.

Mine randomly stuck sometimes by flooring it, and let go randomly by flooring it. Do the same, see if that will make it let go.
Do not start an engine with the throttle stuck open. Find the issue soon, don't do like I did to get by with it. I knew that I would decommision mine soon, it wasn't a big deal for mine.

It sounds like you need your truck, take the time to find the problem. I would remove the throttle cable from the throttle body and play with both until you make it stick. Narrow down the problem to a specific part, then throw that part away, after venting on it of course. Good luck,

try lubing the throttle linkages typical ford problem usually when you first hit the gas though.

Thanks for all the help guys. I found out what the problem is though. Something completely stupid, and I hope that was all it was. I havent driven it since then, but after I fixed I started it up, and listened to it idle. It doesnt sound any different to me, but thats just me. I guess though, that Id be the first on to notice if the engine sounded off, since Im in the truck everyday.

Back to the problem. I dont know why it affected the gas pedal so badly, but the throttle body was caught on the casing that covers it from debris. Id lost a screw to it, and I think, when I put the radiator in, messing with the air hose might have loosened it enough so that when I gassed so hard it rattled and caught the throttle open. I took the cover off, just to look at it, and it snapped back into place. Engines fine now.

Im really hoping it didnt do any damage to the truck, and that everything will be fine now. Hopefully.
