adding cruise control with junkyard parts

I want to add cruise control, but don't want to pay for the kit from ford. If I go to a local junk yard, what all will I need to get to be able to add cruise to my truck? It's a 1998 4.0 SOHC Sport 4x4. Thanks.

controls on the hood. the module that opens/closes the throttle automatically, all the wiring for it. i personally would buy the kit from ford, or have ford install it.

how much do you really need it? i would think you'd only need it unless you're doing a LOT of highway driving.

You could use a rostra cruise control system (www.rostra.com) and install it for $300 ish..

the cruise control module is < $200...

for the control you can add a lever mount or use the Rf module (buttons go on the side of the steering wheel)

either of these cruise modules work.. (one is vacuum the other is all electric.. which most people feel is better)

For the controls you can use any of these part #'s Control Lever: 250-3421,250-3125,250-3742 The controls range from $50-$80 depending on which one you get...

they don't list you needing a throttle adapter but you could call them and ask.

A friend of mine used to work at a speedometer shop which is how I know about this cruise control...
I'm actually getting ready to install one on my new to me Honda (new Daily Driver)..

To install a factory set up, you need to get the factory wiring diagrams so you can see all the inputs and outputs. It might surprise you everything that is interconnected. Off the top of my head, you would need the servo assy, cable, TB linkage assy that would allow the hook up of both the cruise cable and the throttle cable, all necessary wiring, switches, modules as required, clock spring for a cruise equipped vehicle, etc. It could be daunting to say the least. Just as installing factory navigation in a vehicle that didn't come with it is possible, it isn't cost effective.

Hi, I got all the parts way cheaper than 300. I used a 93 donor truck, mines a 94. I have it all installed but the last 6 wires on the cruise computer, two hoses for vaccum, brake/clutch switch. I can not seem to find the wiring pins that have the same colors as mine. I think they should be somewhere.There are 6 wires on one plug that go to the accuator under the hood, the other plug is the one I am having trouble with. I know where the wires go but not which wire. If you try and get it installed let me know. I push the on button for the horn to work. If I hook up the second ground I blow the horn fuse. This would seem to indicate the wires are wrong. I hooked up the color indicated so I am lost now. I sure could use some help. I am not a mechanic but a parts replacer. I am willing to learn. Thanks if you can help

Well, I managed to find someone on ebay selling the factory kit. I got it for $35! MUCH easier than trying to piece it together. The kit was for a Ranger, but the only difference was that I needed a different servo cable. Picked that up from the junk yard for $2.

i put a factory cruise into my 98 sport. it was real easy! i got a complete column out of a 98 or 99 (that way you will have everything that you need, you can re-use your airbag, and wheel if you want, that's what i did), along with the cable and motor like cobraguy said. BUT you also need the master cylinder from the donor truck. it has the switch on top of the cylinder, and yours will not have this (when you go to plug it in, the wires are laying on the fender apron). it took me about 3 hours to put it in (and that was including lying under there for a hour looking at everything). it was a plug and play! when i used it for the first time, the light in the dash even came on. i spent about $200 (only to find out that i could of got it for $75 at a different yard a month later) and a aftermarket one would have been around $500. you do the math. good luck.

one more thing, when you are done, go to ford and get a recall kit for the switch, that is the one on your master cylinder. it is also the one that is setting some explorer's and rangers on fire, even when they are not running. it is only about $15 or so.
