Adding instant fuel economy?

You can get a bluetooth OBD2 like this, I paid $10 for mine; that will send OBD2 information to a laptop or tablet wirelessly.
Mine came with ScanTool software for Windows or you can download the free Torque app from Google Play for Android. Link to Torque app
Torque has a lot of gauges in it but it doesn't have a real time fuel mixture gauge, I don't think any of the OBD apps do. For that I think you have to tap into the wideband O2 sensor.
Once your OBD2 is bluetoothing (yes, that's a word....now) to your tablet you can reverse the image and project it onto the windshield as a HUD.

I also saw a DIN 2 stereo with a 7 inch LCD touch display that had an OBD app built in.

I personally use the technique called pulse&glide, or burn&coast to some. Its about 3 mpg gain for me from driving with load.

That method reduces pumping loss. It's almost the opposite to what you do with a carburetted car.

yes on a carb you want steady throttle, but with fuel injection the whole concept changes as it is more efficient to speed up then while slowing down DFCO (deceleration fuel cut off) and glides down in speed. Im apart of an eco forum for vehicles so reducing losses is the goal and buying another vehicle as a toy

Where the hell do you guys learn the physics of gas mileage?

other smart people using similar gauges and sharing their knowledge on forums. most of the knowledge i have on gas mileage is from other people posting their experiences on another friendly and ecofriendly forum. Then i can put the driving techniques to the test

...and are these forums a secret?

got it installed and it works great!!! after using it for one one day and about 20 miles of city driving i really feel i can take my ex from around 10 city to around 13 or 14 city... i could only imagine if i got it tuned up really nice, tmh, exhaust, and a tune how well i would be doing. low 20s for sure... The only negatives are it is a little hard and time consuming to set up how you want it. There are like 50 gauges and you gotta pick which ones you want to display and where to display them. but i got it with the vertical mount and have it up on my dash right above my steering wheel on the left corner by the A piller.. it didnt come with any instructions but a easy google search let me print out some and off i went.. the only really bad spot for the ex is accelerating.. if i keep my speed constant i can get mid 20s all day.. at any speed from 35 to 55...

I burn about .61 gallons per hour idle when I use my remote start which I do every day in the winter here..

Be careful. It did not read almost any perimeters on my 97 explorer. They tested the device upon return and said it was fine. I got no speed related readings, so speedo, odo, mpg etc...

Not sure if it doesn't work on 97 explorers or if I have a fault in my system but my OBD port and all my gauges work...

It worked fine on my 97 Mountaineer.

Interesting. I must have a computer issue or the device was faulty and they wouldn't admit to it.

Did you try it on another vehicle, the device reads only what the computer sends to it, except mpg values thats a bunch of algorithms that plug in multiple values.

interesting.. it seams to work for me... so far my average for the last few days is at 13.8 so it seams right on par... i would try it on my other vehicles but nothing else is obdII compliant. I think yours would have been a faulty unit but like others have said you should try it on another vehicle.

This was 2-3 years ago now but I do believe it worked in a blazer or a kia, i know I checked it on something. It was just my vehicle. I got my $ back but ended up eating the shipping costs.

make sure to tune your UG and check your mileage at the pump. you tune your UG by zeroing your miles and choosing tank fill up after you fill your tank, then the next time you fill up change the miles to what your trip says since last fill and the gallons it took to fill.

Mine was about 7mpg off when i got it now its about .7mpg off but its on the low side so it makes me try harder to get it up

Doing this calibration and knowing/setting the size of the tank also allows you to drain your tank significantly farther and with allot more confidence than using the gas gauge also.
