Admin Console Swap

If anyone is looking for a VIN that would allow them to lookup parts for the admin console.. Just saw this one listed on an auction site. 1FM5K8AC2PGA17483. From the photos, it appears someone removed the console and all required parts before it got to the auction site, but you can see the SYNC3 component under the dash.

I had also found this one that had the 12.1 inch screen 1FM5K8AW3MNA14450.
crazy they spent the time to swap things over

I dont think they did, I think they took the admin console out before putting the car up for auction. I don't see the standard upfitting wire harnesses there, just the base model ones.

So, I just finished installing my Admin Console.. MacGyver'd it a bit..
Took the board our of the metal case like some other people have done. Removed the Upper console panels to find more room. Snuck the board up behind the Front Climate Controls. I attached 2 folded pieces of paper to the back of the board to act as insulation against the metal that was there.

Nice and clean, i did mine slightly different.
I had to really pull on the E-brake cable to be able to connect it to the console, that was a pain of it’s own.

Does your radio power on with your vehicle?

In my case, i have to manually turn on my radio every time i start the vehicle. I was looking at the board housing case and it seems it was grounded to the vehicle by that one torx bolt.

I wonder if i have to ground the board to the metal chasis behind the climate control area.

The radio does power on with the vehicle. There is a ground on the main plug, so grounding to the chassis should not be needed. Mine is technically not because of how I have it setup.

Just wondering if the radio powers up with the radio ON/OFF button when the vehicle is OFF? It should.

are you the same person who was planning on swapping in sync after?

The radio does not power on with the button unless the car is on, vehicle in acc mode. No car to my knowledge powers the radio on while the vehicle is off.

I'm one of them yes. I'm still trying to purchase a salvage explorer in order to get the wiring harnesses and seats. This is a temp solution.
I'm trying to get a black salvage explorer so I can swap out my doors (white for black), that has the roof vents (I do have a rear climate control system), leather seats, and the premium sound (pillar c speakers and subwoofer). If I can get everything I have the wiring guide that should help me completely convert the interior over to civilian.

FYI, all my Explorers and Lincolns that I had/have can power ON the radio with the engine shut OFF. The same applies to the integrated garage door opener.

I'll check it after work today.

I took some time out at lunch earlier and swapped out my steering wheel. Rubber PD model to Civilian Leather model.
I had to take off the paddle shifters and swap over the PD buttons. I initially tried to use the Civilian buttons to allow me to activate the volume controls, but ran into a few issues.
1. They did not work "out of the box" so to speak.
2. Forscan would not let me change the left control. Whenever I tried to save the modified config I got an error and it failed to apply.

I did the swap as well but did not try to swap out the steering controls to add the volume options as i thought about it after i had assembled everything back together.

Did you swap the wire harness from the civilian steering wheel and tried to program the volume buttons?

Confirmed, the radio does power on when the vehicle is not turned on or even have the key in the ignition.

I tried with the PIU harness and the civilian one, without the paddle shifters being attached. Neither got the switches to work. I checked the wiring diagram book I have and there are no different diagrams for the controls... Incidentally the part number printed on the back of both the civilian control and the PIU control was the same.
Point of info, even the cruise control buttons which are common among the 2 controls failed to work. So I suppose its possible that the control is broken.

I do not know how to program the buttons, I was attempting to see if I could activate the civilian controls by changing the left control model number in the SCCM in Forscan. There are multiple options with similar part numbers and variant -x at the end. For example the part number on all 4 controls is listed as L8A1F-9E740, both left and right sides and both civilian and PIU left control.
In Forscan under the SCCM the left control is listed as LB5T-9E740-B* while the right is H1BT-14K147-A* / LB5T-9E740-D*. But I could not set any other options for either the left or right control as Forscan failed saying there was an error.

Gotcha…i asked because the civilian steering wheel i purchased came with it’s own control harness..i did’nt use the civilian harness and wondering if i had used it, if i’d probably gained the volume control option.

When I pulled them apart I checked the wiring connections on the civilian and PIU versions. And short of lacking the wires for the paddle shifters, the PIU one looked the same.
I initially tried the PIU harness with the Civ controls and when that didn't work switched to the Civ harness. When that didn't work either I swapped back to the PIU harness and controls.

Shame, I'm hoping to add adaptive cruise but if you can't change the buttons guess it won't work

Supposedly someone did that and got it working. But I forget where I heard it from. I can't seem to find it here unless it was you mentioning it in another thread. IT could also be in one of the facebook groups I'm in.

I found only a single post here on the topic.

I've done it on older cars, the procedure was to get the radar + mount, then run power and can lines to it. Personally I'd skip adding the harness and it will probably be more trouble than it's worth if you can even find the right one.

The BCM + Cluster needed some changes in forscan but even without the "right" steering wheel buttons it worked. You just couldn't adjust the gap distance.

I totally figured out how to do the acc. I will provide a technical report on it.
