First off, not for a vehicle.

I am looking into buying a riding mower from a guy in my neighborhood. It has some age on it, and the whole thing needs some work, and a new paint job. I don't think I am going to go through the trouble of buying "real" paint, and putting a "real" paint job on it.

I think I am going to just can paint the mower, but I have seen how ugly this can get. I did paint a couple of golf carts a few years ago with multiple coats of Rustoleum, and light sanding in between coats, and they came pretty nice.

So, anyone have any advice/tips for can spraying on larger items like a riding mower?

it has removal body parts right? i would paint them off the mower... also good pain adhesion is in the prep work, you dont need to sand it down to the metal but you should at least make sure its really clean and scuff up the existing paint then use a primer on it then a couple coats of spray....

heres mine..herc liner and toyo red from a can. came out pretty nice. im going to redo it with a nice color and clear coat this summer though.

just snaded it well. washed it with dish soap. wiped it with a tac reg and started spraying.

It isn't old!!! It is experienced!!! :D

Heck, it has a 46" deck and moves...............for $200, I ain't complaining. It needs new blades (out of balance and worn down) and, at least, one blade shaft/pulley replaced. Some around me think I am nuts getting a riding mower for the 1/4-1/3 acres I own, but when it is 95* w/ 90%+ humidity outside, there is nothing I hate more than doing yardwork! :thumbdwn:

My color choice may come down to what I already have in the garage at my mom's. ;) If I have two cans of one color, that is the color it is going to be.

I am not exactly sure how much of the front body I will leave on it, so painting it may be a moot point. The damn sides on the thing make it impossible to get to anything on the engine, so those are coming off. And if the sides act as any kind of support for the front or "hood," I may pull it all off.

I should have some "after" pics of it next weekend.

You don't see many riding lawn mowers in richmond haha

The hood and sides keep the engine clean. You'd be surprised how much grass and dust will build up on your engine. Dont forget... this is air cooled and the dust will go right thru your air filter and it will start to run really hot and crappy and catch on fire :fire:

I think you should put some work into your lawn before you work on the lawn mower. :p Either that or stop pissing outside.

You dont need the sides but they do help, just make sure you clean up any oil/grease on the engine if you take them off.

Nice lawnmower. Here's somethin to aspire to :p

I use one of those paint can spray handles from wal-mart for spray painting (used to be $1). My finger gets tired quick pushing the little button. It makes it like holding a paint gun with a trigger. Works better for me.

Those also save your hands from getting paint on them...usually spray cans are low quality, and the nozzles spray all over.

If you want it to look nice you should find an auto body&paint supplier that mixes paint up right there in there facility. Some do sell spray cans. I used to use that cheap walmart or Canadian tire crap until i found this. It cost me around $25 for a good size can. It looks 100% better. Exact color maches as well. I did the front fender and rear rockers on my ex. People don't even believe I did it ! Looks brand new!

Wet sand between coats.

Let the dust settle in the closed room before you start painting. If you doubt how much dust there is, shine a flashlight across the floor then walk through the beam.

Wear a respirator.
