Advice on Exhaust (Dynomax Perhaps?)

I wanted to report back after more use. I can tell you this for sure; the exhaust is louder than it was when first installed. Today I towed the boat about 50 miles on freeway and highway. Don't get me wrong, I like the sound. But, be warned that it has gotten louder over it's first week of use. I do really like it still, but it may be louder than some ppl may want. I still wouldn't refer to the sound as 'objectionable', but it is noticible. Still very mellow but sometimes almost to the point of droning. Not at freeway speeds though. It's still barely audible while cruising on the freeway.
Just thought some of you might like an update!

All things considered, whats going to be better for me:The Flowmaster 50 or Dynomax Super Turbo?

I don't want something too loud, just a more truck-like sound. Increased performance would be nice too :)

I have a gibson system...my intake seems louder than the gibson, I dont ever really notice it unless I am trying to listen for it. Many people do not notice that I have an aftermarket system on my truck. Performance increased also. This would be my sugestion if you want something very mellow.

Guys, I bit the bullet and ordered a Hooker Aero Chamber muffler. Their literature says that the Aero Chamber flows 23% better than the "leading" performance muffler (which I have to assume is Flowmaster). They are also supposed to be quieter than most, due to their "stepped chamber" design. Claims have been made that they give 5% better mpg, too.

All this tilted me toward the Aero Chamber. It's already been shipped, and should arrive in a few days. When it's installed, I'll report back.

Can't wait to hear about the Hooker. Please keep us advise.

Hooker Aero Chamber

OK, I spent the better part of this afternoon underneath the Explorer, installing the Hooker Aero Chamber muffler. I'd forgotten how much FUN it can be working on exhaust systems.....

The Hooker is a well-built muffler, with all welded seams. It's made of a heavy-gauge steel outside case and has stainless parts inside. It weighs 14 lbs. versus the 13 lb stock muffler that I removed. It appears to me to be durable enough to outlast any vehicle that it's installed on. The cost plus shipping was about $68.

The first thing I noticed when I started it up, was that the idle increased by about 500 rpm over normal. This must have been caused by the better flow of the Hooker. (After driving it awhile, it dropped down to normal, so I didn't reset the PCM). If you like loud pipes, then this muffler isn't for you. It's louder that stock, but not by much. It has a low tone that sounds like that Porsche SUV commercial; the one where the guy is revving the engine over a cell phone.

I can tell a slight difference in throttle response. It seems to have more pep in the lower rpm range. All in all, I'm glad I chose the Hooker. I filled the tank up tonight, and will check the mileage over next week. I'm expecting 1 or 2 extra mpg from it.......we'll see.

I didn't have a chance to get it on the Interstate tonight, so I don't know about "droning" at highway speeds. Maybe I can tell more after living with it for awhile.

So how is the hooker treating you?
impressions on the e-way? towing?

Okay, I'm an old fart that doesn't like loud exhausts but I'm also looking for a any performance increase I can get.

I just recently got a Magnaflow catback exhaust. I didn't want a real loud flowmaster and so I went with the Magnaflow. I does have a "throaty" sound to it, but only when you rev it up or are accelerating pretty quick. When you are just cruising down the street, it is real quiet and plus, IMO, it gave it a good bit of power, since it was replacing the stock exhaust off my 93. I would recommend this to anyone.

I just wanted to chime in on my experience with the Dynomax Super Turbo. I towed the boat to the lake last week (about 100 miles each way), and there was no resonance at 70 mph. I have a 3.73 axle, and rpm's were about 2300-2400. The engine has more power than before. It maintained speed much better going up the hills. Gas mileage is up a little, also. The transmission did downshift once, rpm's went to about 3000, and it was fairly loud compared to the stock system. But in overdrive, no problems.

Lee, my computer keeps kicking me offline when I PM you, so I'll try to answer your questions here.

I couldn't be more pleased with the Hooker. It has a low pitched tone when accellerating but then quietens down at cruise. It is no louder than the stock muffler at interstate speeds, and no droning or resonance at all. It gained me about 1 mpg, but I'm checking the mileage again this week, hoping for more. I did gain a noticable low end torque increase. It feels a lot more peppy from a standing start.

Lee, as far as installation, it was a piece of cake. However, I have the single inlet/outlet, and yours has the dual inlet. You'll have to get either a dual inlet muffler or use a Y pipe to connect the two inlets. I used the stock tailpipe and just replaced the muffler. I did have to add what's called a "spout" to extend the muffler outlet to meet the tailpipe (since the Hooker was a bit shorter than the stock muffler). I ordered all my parts from the Summit catalog, except the spout, which NAPA stocks.

Jimmy, I don't tow with it, but I wouldn't expect a lot of noise towing. When adding throttle on an interstate grade, it stays quiet. BMX's description of his Magnaflow sounds a lot like the Hooker. It seems like the faster you're driving, the quieter it gets. It only has a low "throaty" sound when accellerating at lower speeds.

Thanks for the post Don.

Glad the Hooker is working out for you. When I contacted the Hooker people they said they didn't have a vehicle specific muffler for my 4dr. They said if I could take some measurements and get back to them they would see what they could come up with that approximates the stock muffler size and specs (in my case dual in single out). I guess I'll have to get the mesurements and see where this goes.

I got the Flowmaster Force II kit, which comes with the 50 series muffler. It's got great tone. Not too loud, and with the windows shut, it's barely noticeable. I have no air conditioning, so I have my windows open all the time. :p Anyway, It's got a great deep, smooth, mellow tone and sounds great when you step on it. At cruising speeds, it's not very loud at all. I love it. Hope this helped.

I'm looking into replacing the stock one on my truck. As this is my family vehicle, seems like the Flowie 50 is the way to go in the loudness vs. performance end of things. Becasue I would like something a little more "truck-like" but not loud becasue my wife would not like that. (but I would have open headers if I could) :)

I'm getting a Magnaflow cat back exhaust system put on tomorrow with the stock 2 inch pipe, should I expect a noticable performance increase?

Mr Ant, according to what I felt with the Aero Chamber, you should feel more low end torque. Don't expect it to shoot out from under you at stoplights, but it will definetely run better and have more pep. Those stock mufflers are very restrictive.

You really don't need larger than 2" tailpipe on a street vehicle. As the exhaust flows toward the rear it cools and the volume contracts. A relatively smaller pipe will keep the gas velocity and torque up.

I want to buy an exhaust too im think about the 50 series. Can i take the resonator or w/o causing problems with 02 sensors?

I defenitely noticed the low end pep, nothing necessarily in the high end, but when I got on it at a stop light felt like I had a little extra somethin from 0-50 mph
