My service manual covers Aerostars, Explorers, and Rangers leading me to wonder: how similar is the Explorer and Aerostar? I know they share an engine, but are there any other components that the two share? Suspension, driveline, etc?

Thanks.

they are somewhat close.... all based of the ranger, but the aerostar still is differnt... my old aerostar had rear coils..

also from what i researched befroe, they also used an A4LD but it isnt the same as what was in the Explorer... if anything the aerostar was clsoer to a long wheelbase bronco 2.... the aerostar was jsut not very heavy duty, well i guess technically it was a 1/2 ton truck, but they dont measure minivans like that..... my old aerostar shared a tranny with a ranger and a mustang.....

Thanks for the info.

Mine has the 5R55E 5-speed automatic. Do you know if it's the same in the Explorer? Are the rear axles the same... for example, the same differential?

is the aerostar a 4x4 or a 4x2, as the trannies are differnt because of that fact alone? i am pretty sure they wouldnt be easily interchangeable, as they are setup differntly... in the second jen explroer they had ifs frotn and the first gen x had ttb.... i had an 86 aerostar and it had front coils, 4x2 and not ttb front, but rather the type of suspension the 4x2 98+ rangers have (non-edge)

I believe the intake manifolds are different on the aerostar vs. explorer 4.0's, too.
