New 2011 Explorer Limited. At 2000 miles, on a return from a day long fishing trip, last Thursday, we started to drive up the driveway. The air conditioner suddenly stopped, the heat started blowing at maximum fan speed and highest possible temperature and the entire control console went dead. The Entertainment and back up camera still worked. The steering wheel controlled screen on the dash said, "Temporarily lost connection with climate system." The radio could no longer be controlled with the big dial, and nothing would stop the desert wind coming out of the vents.
The nearest dealer, not the one where I bought it because I was afraid to get back on the freeway with a vehicle so dependent on computers, told me that the entire center control module must be replaced. Plus (or minus) they do not have the part; the part that is defective must be returned to Parts Central and a new one then sent out in a one for one exchange. Possible return date 5 days after I dropped it off.
Since it's not the dealer where I purchased it, no courtesy rental car. It really could not be driven with the heater going like an after burner.
I love the car. I have owned 4 consecutive Ford products; the two that weren't family hand me downs ran for 135-150,000 miles and when the air conditioners broke, I bought new ones. Both of the latter had to be towed at around 80,000 miles for a major repair and were otherwise trouble free. I own Ford stock. I love this car/truck; Lexus's customer car looks rather good all of a sudden however.
You would think that Ford, with a new model and a controversial, distracting voice controlled computer system might want to do something at least to cushion the blow of the whole thing going belly up; a cheapo loaner car, even the offer of one, might have been tactful. I am of course blindly hopeful that the old Fix Or Repair Daily has in fact been out grown. The first results are not encouraging.
