I had a shifting problem in my XLS. My trannie overreved when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear, and would sometimes make the O/D light flash.

The mechanic I brought it to stated that it was the valve body gasket. He replaced it, the filter, and fluid for $300. After he had a chance to have the trannie apart, he stated that some of the damage was perminent and that it may get worse down the road. The trans still revs, but not as bad. I have not had a chance to drive it for a long period yet.

Has anyone had a simular experience, and if so, how long may it last? and would this warrant a complete rebuild?

Thanks

ya the valve body on these trannies tend to back off whick in turn blows the gasket out and causes the tranny to slip.

Do you think it will last for some time before I need an overhaul?

If you padit eh guy $300 to fix the problem.
He said the problem is the valve body gasket, replaced the gasket, filter and fluid, right?
Then you get the truck back and its still doing it, just not as bad?

I would take it back and tell him the $300 you spent did NOT fix the problem.

He told me that he could not promise that the gasket alone was the problem. He said that the damege that was caused was perminent. I must have waited to long to have it looked at. He gave me a detailed bill and it seemed fair.

Even if I was to have more work done it would cost more money. He showed me the gasket and I could see where it blew out. That section was not getting fluid. At least now it is getting fluid and maybe it will give me some time to save for the rebuild.

OKay good, at least he was fair in his assesment and treatment.

Yes your fix was a band aid for the real problem, which will eventually rear its ugly head again, so have a back up plan (rebuild).

Research is your best friend when it comes to spending potentially thousands of dollars on tranmission repairs. Often the rebuild is where the problems start, but that can be avoided by asking the right questions and talking to the right people.......

I can get a trans from a salevage yard that has 45k miles on it for $900....That may be the better route?

I had the same bad gasket problem on my Explorer. Instead of taking it to a tranny shop, they basically looked to see that it was an Explorer and said rebuild, I took it to a Ford dealership and they replaced the valve body(which is the only real damaged part). That was around $800, which was a new valve body, the new gasket and labor. That's a lot cheaper than ~$2000 for a rebuild/new tranny.

This isn't making me feel all warm and fuzzy inside to say the least, I'm picking up my XLS this weekend, same year as yours. How many miles are on it and what were the symptoms like?

2000 xls 90k over reving from 2nd to 3rd gear and it will cause th O/D light to blink at times.

Hmmm I'll have to watch for that on the final test drive. it only has 36K on it.

don't get all hung up on the same year and model the same transmission has been used in all the v6's since 95 as long as you change the fluid frequently you should be fine.

I am now devbating buying a cheap used car to travel back and forth to work, 104 mile round trip. I think that I need to save for a rebuild. The valve body gasket was replaced; #350 and the tranny still slips from 2nd to third.

I have a few questions and hope that someone can help. When I step on the gas, especially on the hiway, the ex kinda stutters, kinda like a shudder. But if I have it in neutral it does not do it. This only happens when I accelerate hard. I have a feeling it may be the torque converster or broken mounts. Any ideas?

Also, would it be feasible and/or cheaper to just replace the valve body myself and not get a rebuild?

Thank you.
