Aftermarket remore starter problem?

I got the Duralast one from AutoZone.

I turned the key on and had 12.2 volts across the terminals at the starter. I even took the battery out of the other explorer and tried it and it still just clicked. So I took it out and called them and of coarse they don't have another one in stock, lol. I hope it is a bad starter but at the same time they aren't going to be happy with my mouth. I spent half a day again testing wires and removing this and now I have to drive 30 miles and put another one back on.

well, in my experience (which covers quite a few decades) any electric motor that wont run until you smack it is defective. AutoZone is supposed to test all defective returns in their test machine, but even if it runs when they test it, i'd demand a replacement as it seems to work intermittently.

They called and they've gotten another starter in for me so I'll go get it and install it.

Does anyone offhand have a diagram for the starting system for a 2000 5.0? My wonderful Haynes manual has it for a 96 thru 99 and says the newer models are "similar", lol. The books supposed to cover thru 2001 but there's very little for these models.

00 and 01 are the same as 99. There were no changes those years.

As far as the starting system goes, and most other things, 96-01 are exactly the same, aside from some differences in wiring color.

Well, I took their Duralast starter back to them to pick up the new one and they put it on their machine to test it. They tried 6 times and couldn't get it to spin once. I told the guy to give it a couple wacks with a hammer and guess what? It spun. I brought the replacement home, installed it and she spins fast. Knock on wood but I think the problems solved. For eight more dollars I could have gotten a new AC Delco from Rock Auto. Lesson learned.

Needless to say I'm not real happy. The guy there told me if it were him he'd be filing a complaint. I guess nowadays it's to much to expect something to actually work.

Sorry I missed you post Bob. Thx for the info.

NP - I use this site all the time for wiring diagrams for my "fleet" of old vehicles.

I've got it saved. It will come in handy for sure. I have a "few" old ones of my own. I'm hoping to get rid of one this weekend as I found a 2000 5.0 with no rust I can get for 1500, lol.
