i have a 98 with the mach system and the door speakers have that factory enclosure would there be any benefit to using a aftermarket speaker in stock door enclosure? or should i just put them straight in the doors?

Are you talking about that plastic piece? If so you have to use it. Otherwise the speaker will interfere with the window.

this is what im talking about,

it held a small speaker and a tweeter.

That whole thing is the speaker, throw it away. Some of the OEM speakers also have a spacer piece that looks similar to what you show, but the speaker assembly is completely separate. Any 6x8" speaker should go in any Explorer, front or rear up to at least 2001.

FYI, the Mach radio of the Explorer doesn't produce much bass to the door speakers, it all goes to the sub. That is unique to the Mach Pioneer radio. So keep that in mind when you replace speakers or the sub etc.

ok thanks,
o and i know about the radio, i just replaced the headunit with a aftermarket and it made a world of difference.

I would make a set of wooden baffles & mount a set of 6.5 /2 ways in the 6x8 speaker cutout.
