Aftermath of Tranny Fluid change

Hello all hope all is well.

I am looking for some advsie on what the issue is and how it can be corrected.

I took my 04XLT 4.0 to my mechanic and asked him to drop the pan let the fluid drain, change the gasket and filter.

I alos had him change the transfer case fluid.

All was good the first two days and now the tranny is acting up.

First issue is when I come to very hard stop when I drive off the engine revs and the tranny take a while to get into gear.

Next issue is when I come to a gentle stop, sometimes the truck vibrates and then the same thing happens, it revs and take a while to get into gear.

Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.


On a side note, I have not noticed this before so don't know if it is new or not.
The AC blower shuts off at some intervals, I don't see a patters but it is very annoying.
I only noticd it after my Tranny fluid change.

Hm sounds like the tranny is on its last leg.
I was always told by my old man that changing the tranny fluids usually results in problems.
Could be something the mechanic did also but i highly doubt it.

what type of fluids did he use?

It is possible that the filter gasket was not installed correctly. I have seen old ones stay on the tranny......interfering with the new one.

Did your mechanic use the correct oil?

If you did not have the problem before, and now you do, always suspect that the work was done incorrrectly. You might take it to a different (better) mechanic.

+1. These transmissions are sensitive to fluid level, like Goldilocks: too much or too little are both equally bad.

This^^^ it may just be low on fliud. My fathers 02 would slip when hot and on slight inclines. added a little more trans fluid and it fixed the problem.

Thanks all, according to him he did use the MERCON fluid suggested by Ford.

I'll go back and have him check the fluid level and gasket

Check with him that it was MERCON V, not MERCON.

The fluid should be checked with the engine running, at operating temp, and level. Sounds like it is under filled.

Def check the fluid. The slipping you described sounds like a fluid level problem. To check fluid, look at the tranny dipstick while your transmission is warm and the car is running. Never check tranny fluid while the vehicle is cold.

Note: I remember hearing something about the 3rd gen's having sealed transmissions which means you might not have a dipstick, but im not sure.

Unfortunately your tranny is sealed. You can't check the fluid. There is a procedure on how to do it. I dont have the link, but if you search "how to check tranny fluid" you should find it.

I just had the transmission fluid and filter changed on my '02 Explorer this morning. I watched them do it. As a last step, they had a person climb into the driver's seat, start the engine and engage the transmission two different times. They topped off the transmission fluid each time. The mechanic said it was necessary to ensure there was the required amount fluid in the transmission. Maybe your shop didn't follow this procedure and you are low on fluid.

Check fluid. Might need updated pump like one included in transgo kit.

Same thing happened to me the very next day after getting it serviced, and I took it to a local transmission place. Since it is sealed and there is no dipstick, most likely the fluid is low. It took them 5 minutes to figure out it was not full enough, added more and sent me on my way. By the way, it didn't cost me anything at all.
Since there isn't a dipstick, when they flush and fill and replace the gasket, it is hard to tell if the fluid is full. It is a bit of a guessing game. Good luck!
