i think i might become a tacoma owner pretty soon. i cant afford to fix the explorer every week. when ford learns how to make a good reliable truck, than maybe ill look at one then. but im only 17 and cant afford this stuff so im gunna save up and try to buy a 4x4 extra cab v6 tacoma. cheaper lifts and extremely more reliable! idk i still cant decide

They hold their value. So you're gonna need to save a while. I say put the Explorer back down to stock height, put 30s on, and then repair will go down. I have barely had to do anything to my Explorer. How many miles on yours?

the only repair ive had is the tranny, but i dont want ot have to relplace hubs and ball joints and everything else that for screwed up on. im not gunna put it back down after all ive done, if i find the right person i think i might get some good money

Problem is, finding the right person. You don't have hubs. So you don't have to worry about that. Ball Joints, you'll have those on any vehicle. Tranny, I can't really defend that. But I'm guilty too. I was looking at an '01 Tacoma the other day. Too much $$$ though. I don't know if I could give up the Explorer though. I'd be tough. I get too sentimental with things.

i dont have hubs?!?!?!? i thought every 4x4 does?

Nope, not the newer ones. Ever notice that you don't have to engage anything when putting it into 4WD?

It's not a Ford thing, every Manufacturer has its 'Lemons'.

I have had my 93 Explorer for almost 2 Yrs now and outside of normal maintance, I have not had to fix anything (that cost me anything). It is currently pushing 170k. It has been lifted up on 33's for almost a year now. I got the 5spd, so I can't speak to the automatic issues.

Repairs off the top of my head YTD: (outside of routine)

Adjusted sensor on 4x4 Shift motor

hmm well that's it so far.

Sorry to hear you are having issues with it. :(

Good luck on whatever you decide.

Toyota make some damn good cars and trucks. Quite reliable engines too. Only thing I don't like about Toyota is the sheet metal they use- too thin! You could actually make a dent on the hood by pushing your palm against it to close the hood.

Siekyre, you just jinx yourself. :p

i thought they were auto hubs tho?

i've had fairly good luck with my expos... *knock on wood* i mean things have gone bad, no company can make parts that last forever or are 100%. I believe on the 2 X's i've owned over a span of about 4 years the only MAJOR repairs i've done is 1 radiator, and 1 lower ball joint, set of Ujoints and manual hubs (on my 92). I've spent ALOT Preventive mainteance....but thats part of owning a car....
