I've been reading up on the "flare shift" problem that my 2001 6 cylinder SOHC with 200K miles on it was experiencing. I got a Transgo kit, new upper and lower gaskets for the separator plate (reused same one, added tiny rivet), a new EPC solenoid and an inch lb. torque wrench.
Sure enough, one gasket was blown out in two spots, one near the low reverse servo and another spot near the solenoid bank I think. So I did the kit, swapped out a new solenoid bracket, although the old one looked fine, and changed the EPC solenoid. Was very careful to criss cross and torque all valve body bolts to 85 inch lbs. Put four quarts of Mercon V "high mileage" ATF in, and went for a test drive. There was no sign of large parts in the pan, just a small amount of microscopic metal dust. I did not use the large rubber seals that were for the center... thingie. Not even sure where it is.
The thing did not want to shift. It would rev up to about 3500 rpms before it would even move. In second and third gears it randomly revved up like it was slipping out of gear at all speeds. By the time I got about 3 miles to my home, the old OD light was blinking and back to limp mode.
Two things *I think* might be wrong. The EPC I got had a white screen "business end", not red like the one it replaced. It otherwise looked identical. Also I did not adjust any bands at all. I didn't know how to do it, and thought I could get away with not messing with them. I'm kinda scared that they or some other parts might be broken considering the high mileage.
Its been having problems for at least a month, every other day or so it would go into limp mode. Could driving it while it's been messed up somehow hurt it more? Is four quarts to much fluid? I did pull the VB out and mostly drained it, and my book says 4 quarts is for a fluid change. The level seemed a bit high on the dipstick, almost a quarter inch over the hash marks after being slightly warmed up.
So far it's far worse than it was before, before it just had a flare shift. Now it doesn't seem to want to go into gear and tries to slip as well, in all gears. Any help or ideas as to what might be the problem would be greatly appreciated.
