My air bag light came on as normal when started, but now is staying on. What does this mean and is there anything I can do myself to fix the problem. Thanks!

ya need to get the code pulled.
contact a body shop

When first turned on, the Air Bag Light should blink a two digit code ( the number of blinks ).

Watch for that and post the data here; we can then help diagnose your problem.

The flash code will be toe digits, eg, 3 flashes followed by a pause then seven flashes, it will reapeat a couple times then the Air Bad Light will remain illuminated.

I'd like to share my recent experience with the air bag light in my 2007 Explorer. The light began coming on during the very cold weather we had in December. I read advice from people who adjusted wires under the front seats. Doing that would make the light go off, but the next time I drove, it would stay on again. While this was going on, it happened that the 4 year old battery was dead two mornings in a row, although the car started fine for the rest of the day after being jumped. As soon as I replaced the battery, the air bag light stopped being a problem. It comes on at ignition, then goes off and stays off.

Low voltage WILL cause a SRS fault.
