Wish I could help you with your problem but I just wanted to tell you that your truck is awesome. I signed your G-Book a while back and was wondering if you were going to join this forum. Glad to see you made it.

thanks brandon i love this forum it's helped me heaps with the car question's. i should have some more pics of my car on sounddomain when i get the dig camera of my mate.

The best way to check if you actually have a problem is to take a small digital thermometer and measure your vent temps. Then do the same thing on another explorer, same outside temp, same settings on the panel.

If there is a LARGE difference, then make sure your A/C clutch is engageing properly, and your system is properly charged. Over and Under chargeed are equally bad for an A/C system.

Check simple stuff first, like a dirty evaporator.

Always check high-side pressures, they are more accurate than low side pressures. On a fully charged 134a system, the high side should be 2.2-2.5 times the ambient temp.

Manifold guages can be bough for 30-50 bucks on ebay or at any autoparts store.

If your system wasn't recharged properly, there may be air mixed in the 134a. Thats very bad.

On a side note........... I was told that canada just accepted using propane in R-12 systems to replace the R-12 refridgerant(sp?) I personaly think that this is nuts and dangerous but would like to hear some feedback

I agree , propane is very dangerous . Its has a great low boiling point ,but in a auto , its just crazy . Would never let someone I love drive a vehicle with propane refrigerant . As far as a/c goes the best method as he previous post had stated get a good thermometer and stick in the closest vent to the heater core . You should get at least 45 on a average day. Theres alot more to this subject that I can help with , but do the thermo test first so i have some #s to work with.

Propane at 225 psi in my car, under the hood on a hot day....  :thumbdwn:

how much gas?

I went to get my air con regassed today but being in the UK the info book has not got the specs for the explorers system. Can anyone help it is a 98 4.0 SOHC XLT does anyone know how much gas it should be filled with.

22 oz of R-134a. That's for an empty evacuated system. Pull a good vacuum on it first.

you should replace your reciever dryer, it acts as your filter and pulls all the moisture out of the system.... the less moisture in the system the cooler the air coming out!!! thats what i would check or replace...

While overall if the system has been open to the atmosphere for any appreciable time, you should replace the receiver/dryer (in our case an "accumulator") if the system has not been open, I'd put that on my optional list. Way more important is evacuating the system for an extended period - removes all moisture and air from the system. Replacing the accumulator is not a bad idea though, just maybe not in the "must do" list.

You know I just had a thought after checking the year of your Ex again. There is some problem with the fact that the accumulator is wrapped in foam, it tended to trap moisture and rust em out. You should a) remove the foam, and b) check for rust. If it is badly rusted I'd replace it. HTH.

Thanks alot I will give that a try and let you know

Not sure about the newer models such as yours, but there was a TSB issued for the older condensors...can't flush them either. You might have a slightly clogged system but be sure to pull vaccum on it and replace what needs replacing before you re-fill it. One more side note... "HOT SHOT R-12" is the best R-12 replacement freon out there. Arizona's been testing it for a while, and I live in Oklahoma...It's tons cheaper, and fully compatible with regular R-12 and it's ozone safe.

Before you jump into a replacement for R-12 such as hotshot (which is by the way the following blend:

Hot Shot, aka
R-414b, aka
Kar Kool = 50% HCFC-22+39%HCFC-124+9.5%GCFC-142b+1.5% isobutane (flammable in quantity)

I'd suggest that you read the thread on converting your AC in the useful threads section, especially the part about fractionalization.

Better yet, anyone wanting pro info regarding a/c and alternative refrigerants go here...

Yes aircondition.com is an excellent site. On the subject of alternate refrigerants often the people giving "pro" advice are the sellers. One of two REALLY pro guys there who are unbiased is Chick... here's his take:

Find the cooling proplem(pressures) and charge with r12 or R134a...Solve all your future problems

For the time being I feel that is sound advice.
Or, go to that site and post your question for "Chick" or "Ignacio". Both are working pros in the field, not sellers with a lab and a bank account. I'll bow to their "higher" current expertise, easily.

Meanwhile I will stand by my comments in my earlier posts regarding the jury being out still on blended refrigerants. Do YOU want to be the guinea pig? And good luck if you take it anywhere to be worked on.
