I have a wierd problem. I put a new A/C compressor on my 1997 Explorer two months. I started hearing some noise while the air conditioning was running. Yesterday I heard a grinding sound that goes away when the air conditioning is turned off but I only hear it in the car. With the hood up and and air conditioning running everything sounds normal. Its a vibration and grinding sound. Does anyone know where else the noise could be coming from? I'm thinking maybe another accessory that gets extra stress on it when the A/C is on.

it may be your a/c clutch needs adjustment. this is accomplished with small washer-like spacers/shims between the 2 halves of the clutch. are there metal filings visible around the clutch? there's a spec for the amount of clearance between the two when the clutch is disengaged (sorry, i don't recall what it's supposed to be). did you replace just the compressor or the compressor with the clutch?

I put a new A/C compressor on it. It still blows cold but hot start ups the compressor grinds and cycles off and on a number of times. Once it gets running its stays on and is cold.
