Hello,
I have a 2010 Explorer 4.0 with third row climate control.
I checked the ac system a few weeks ago before a trip to Florida. Using a set of gauges it need a can and a half of 134a which I added to get the gauges to normal ranges. I spent a week and a half in Florida with it and the ac worked flawlessly, very cold air and no issues at all. I've been home a few days and had a warm day today so I turned on the ac. The car actually shook and the engine fan turned on instantly. Once I got to be shop I put the gauges back on and the high pressure reading actually broke my gauge. It reads to 400 but went beyond and now says 25 with no pressure. The low side was at 50 and there was no change at all when the compressor would kick on. The compressor would only kick on for a second or two then shut off. The compressor did make some nasty noises when it was engaged, I'm not sure if it's from the extreme pressure or if it has an issue?
Any ideas what the issue may be? I'm thinking the compressor is probably ok because, well it's making pressure, and the fact that the low side gauge doesn't budge makes me think there could be a blockage, but from what? Pieces of the compressor? If the compressor did fail and put pieces in the system what all needs to be changed for it to operate correctly again?
Thanks a lot for your help!
