Air Filter

Has anyone ever had a pinging problem due to using a non-OEM air filter? I recently changed the air filters in my 97 Explorer and in my wife's 99 Toyota RAV4. For the Explorer I used a Motorcraft and had to use a Fram (only one brand they had for her truck). Within the week, the RAV4 developed a pinging problem. Not sure if it's coincidence, but just wanted some advice before taking it to the dealer.

Well, quick elimination would be to take the RAV4 to a spot that it pings at. Make sure that it does in fact ping. Then take the air filter out and drive it at the same place that it pings at to see if it goes away. Since pinging is a lean condition symptom. Too much air, not enough fuel, I would find it hard to believe that a brand new paper filter would cause pinging regardless of filter manufacture. However, in this world, one never knows.
