Have you had any problems with hesitation and engine light on?
I have to have the MAF sensor replaced and wanted to know where I can get it cheap?

If you have had the code for the check engine light read and you know it is your MAF that is bad, and needs to be replaced, you can check rockauto.com. They have some remanufactured ones that are less than new ones.

MAF Problems

I'm Having the same problem... But I haven't drove it since march... Only take it out for the winter... So Im getting the engine Code for the MAF... I took some carb cleaner and just sprayed the inside of the MAF... I'm letting it dry as we speak... I'll let you know if that helps any in a couple hours...try it hope it helps... Oh take extra care of the filaments inside the MAF...

Try cleaning it first, do a seach and you can find many threads about it

Yes, try cleaning it first. I've cleaned many MAFs over the years on a variety of vehicles and most often it has solved the issue. The one in my Ex I did over a year ago and it is running 100%.

ehh unfurtunately Mine Didnt work...it was shot... Limped it over to autozone and got one for 98 Bucks... Good luck...

I am having the same prob...I have cleaned the maf and it ran awesome for a few days but it is back to hesitating...how do you know if you need a new one?

did you reset the computer by disconnecting the battery, and then make sure to reset it properly?

I reset the computer by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes...will that not do it?

I believe i have a maf problem with my truck. It will start no prob and drive but there is a serious consistant miss. I have no money to fix. I can remove the maf with the engine running and the idle stays the exact same. ? I know alot about my truck but not this

another fix I found was actually on ebay... It's a cheap 15 bucks Supposed "proformance Mod" chip... What it actually is... is a resistor that goes into the connector between the MAF harness and the MAF itself... I dont like it because it tricks the computer into thinking that the Air Coming in is always cold... I heard it advances the timing... and gives you a little "more" HP... but it can hurt your engine....

Good Luck I hope this helps...

that wont fix anything all that does is splice into the IAT which is incorperated in the maf but serves a different function. if cleaning the maf does not work then i would just replace it

There is one that splices into the IAT...and also one that acts as a jumper(the resistor) on the MAF harness... ;) therefore the fact me mentioning the MAF harness...
Good Luck

I'm having similar hesitation problems... the idle gets rough (more often when under load, but not when accelerating hard). Also, when cruising at 55, it's an almost constand shudder every few seconds. It feels like something is missing a spark, but only every 50-100 revs. I just checked all of the plugs, wires, and cleaned the MAF. I am not getting any computer codes yet, but I did reset the computer.

Ideas?

csmicfool,
I have EXACTLY the same problem with my '00 4.0 SOHC! I've tried the same stuff as you - cleaned MAF, checked plugs & wires, etc. And like you, no CEL to give any codes.
I have also noticed that acceleration can be hesitant. Try this and see if you get the same as me: from rest with a warm engine, select '1' on the auto trans, plant the gas pedal to the floor and take note of how the truck accelerates up to about 50mph, staying in '1' all the while.
Mine sets off real sluggish as if it's in, maybe, 2nd (it isn't); at about 10mph there's a surge like when the 2nd choke (2nd barrel in the US?) on a carburettor kicks in and then at about 30mph it surges again like someone hit the 'nitro' switch.
If this was an older car with a conventional distributer and contact breakers I'd be looking at the dwell angle and checking the vacuum operation of the ignition advance/retard mechanism.
But I've no idea where to start with the Ex! Ford techs with experience of Explorers are few and far between over here in the UK so I might as well try to figure it out for myself with the help of the guys on this forum...

Cheers

I just got back from carquest w/ platinum plugs- The first one I pulled was #3 and it looked ok but sitting next to a brand new one, the gap was obviously way off... I replaced only the #3 plug and it's running perfect.

shytot- have you tried replacing your plugs or just inspecting them- they are tricky ####ers.
P.S.- I think the carb thing you're refering to is a the secondary (usually vacuum or mechanical) throttle valves. Although that shouldn't apply since these are EFI motors. I know exactly what you're talking about though- my project car has mechanical secondaries and if you open the carb over 60% or so, those extra valves just turn a big block into a rocket.

Yes, you got it right with the carb effect - I wasn't sure of the terminology you use over there... I know that it doesn't work the same way with EFI motors but it was the best way I could find to describe how it feels.
OK, the plugs. I bought a set of new platinum plugs and I have to admit to fitting only 3 of them so far - the 3 on (your) passenger side (my driver's side  ). The other 3 will need a bit of thinking about but I will get them done over the holidays... BTW, my truck has only done 45k miles.
