air induction-air filter kit

I have been looking into replacing the stock air filter system in my 96 explorer XLT with an air induction system from either K & N or one from KKM (TRUE-REV SPORT INDUCTION KIT). Both are comperably priced. Does any one have any advice on which is better in terms of parts quality, kit components, etc..... Finally, is this some thing I should be doing, i.e. does it really inc. HP and MPG. I also have read a few reports about a squealing noise after installation. Is this a problem?

The KKM is only a filter and adapter to make it fit; no intake tube. Its better than stock.

I would recommend the K & N or the Mac. I use the Mac.

KKM and K&N are comparatively priced? Never seen that before. As aldive mentioned, K&N is a complete setup. KKM is just an adapter and filter and is normally about 1/2 the price of K&N. MAC is definitely the best value in intake systems and costs more than KKM, but much less than K&N normally. Plenty of people on this site use MAC and are very happy with them.

Make sure you consider a free flowing exhaust if you haven't already. Intake systems in isolation work OK, but are much better when teamed up with an exhaust. The optimal solution is to get both these mods then get some custom tuning via a chip or flasher.
 






Thanks for the advice on the air induction systems. The free flowing exhaust project is next on my list. Do you have any advice on the kits that are currently available? Which ones do you recommend?

Don't get hung up on kits. Pick a muffler you want, then get a shop to weld it into the pipes of your choice. Given that you have a '96, you have the OHV engine. 2 1/4" piping from the cats back is the optimal size according to Flowmaster (based on HP of the engine). There are plenty of choices. Flowmaster is always a popular choice. Magnaflow works well with the OHV engine too.
