I don't think they make any air intake systems for Explorers.

i have already found one, the k&n cold air intake system

Depends on what your looking for and what you want to pay. As far as performance I doubt very much any of them are different.

The KKM is just a filter ~$90. The MAC (which I have) is the chrome tube and filter~$150 (I bought one used). The Volant is a complete air box~$240. And of course you found the K&N.

I just built my own. Purchased a 3 1/2" mandrel bent tube from summit.

Cut it up and welded it. I had two vacuum hose connections and the temp sensor bung to weld on.

Smoothed it all out and used a fine layer of bondo to sand out the final scratches.

And the final shot in the vehicle... dang I seem to have lost that one. I guess I could go out and take a few but I'm sure you get the idea. My only complaint is that the air sucking noise at idle is pretty loud when you're standing outside the vehicle. Inside you don't hear a thing.

Tube only cost $30 and then it just takes a few evenings of work. Oh and I used a MAC filter I had laying in my shed which was originally from a 95 Mustang MAC CAI kit. It was quite compact and fit in there nicely.

That looks really good, Malcolm! I'm very impressed.

hey Malcom lets see that thing on,,,

Bigbadwimp, thanks  Monmix, sure thing. Give me a few minutes. It's raining out so I'll have to do a few contortion acts in the garage.

OK I hope I didn't take to many. I just ran out and snapped what I could. Don't worry I'll be the first to admit I'm no photographer :) Oh and excuse the messy engine bay as I've just got this truck back on the road, literally. Just got done pulling the power steering this morning to pull the remote oil filter's hydraulic hoses that were leaking. Went and got another set made and re-installed this afternoon. I ran about 70 miles a few hours ago and things are looking good so far. Still lots of work to be done but I'm making progress.

What system is that Malcolm?

what air filter did you put on?

The air filter is from a 95 Mustang MAC cold air kit I had laying in my shed. If however you want to build your own you can hit ebay and you'll find all sorts of cheapo intake systems starting anywhere from $20 to $40. I purchased a few of those to get the rubber connections you see joining the pipe to the mass air and throttle body and a various other parts. The aluminum tube that came with it I used to build the intake on my 92 Ranger (the red one). Here's a pic. I know it's hard to see but it's the only pic I have on my PC right now.

i like you custom intake, but i think i might go with the K&N cold air system, anybody have any comments on that>?

Ebay...Search "Ford Explorer air".

The chrome tube from the Mac system, just for show? Or does it have some function that i cant really think of? I am in this market also and im not going to put out $240 for the complete air box, so pretty much the chrome tube will swing me MAC or K&N.

i have been do my research and narrowed down to 3 air systems, k&n, MAC or Volant. the volant is the most expensive, but seems to gain the most hp and torque. but the MAC is all blinged out and only $150. i am still deciding. does anyone have any comments on the Cold Air Intake System they have in the Vehicle?
