Greetings - bought my son a 2002 Explorer XLT several months ago.

Today the A/C, which works fine (nice and cold), decided to switch from blowing through the vents to only through the windshield defroster and the sides of the center floor console.

I thought it might be the blend door but the air blows cold and will warm up when turned over to the hot side of the temperature control.

He went outside to check the A/C and it started blowing through the vents then jumped to the windshield and floor automatically.

What could be causing this to happen?

Thanks.

Sounds like a vacuum leak, when the hvac system loses vacuum it defaults to defrost. Could be a loose or cracked vacuum line either under the hood or under the dash. Happy hunting and welcome to the site!
