about 3 weeks ago i was taking my car to the dealer (for other reasons) and the "check air ride" light came on for the first time ever. the ride was the same as always but i asked the dealer to check it out since there was obviously a concern with the light being on. first they told me that the light was no longer on during their test drive, then they informed the following day that i needed 2 new rear shocks for $800 because both of mine were froze. i went and picked up my car without performing the repairs and the ride home was VERY rough and bouncy, definitely worse than before. due to having another car in the shop my dad was using the explorer to get to work for probably a week, but i'm not sure that he paid attention to the ride. today i drove the truck for the first time since i picked it up from the dealer 3 weeks ago and surprisingly the ride was FINE and no "check air ride" light was on! the shocks were definitely working like they were supposed to while the car was moving, they were no longer "frozen". the truck is now at the dealer because i have an appointment to get the shocks, abs, and heater core repaired tommorw, but i left a note telling them to call me before performing any work.
the one thing i noticed wrong with the shocks was that there was no longer the "buzzing" noise of the air ride system adjusting itself after the car is parked. i parked the car several times on differnt inclines and noticed a "click" noise that used to be followed by the buzzing noise, no buzzing anymore. can you guys help me figure out what the problem is and do my rear shocks actually need to be replaced or is it just a pump (sounds MUCH more like the case)?

i'd really like to know the problem before they call me in the morning because i'm a little upset. the suspension was riding MUCH worse after they had the car and they wanted me to replace the shocks for $800 when they seem to be working perfectly fine now  there are other issues i'm having with this dealer and i don't trust their "diagnosis" they gave me. but they're giving me a deal on the repairs so i can't really take it anywhere else

p.s. - from reading on here i'm pretty sure that my 97 Ex Limited has only one rear ABS sensor on the differential correct? i casually asked about that when i picked up the truck and he immediately said no, there were 2 rear ABS sensors (both need to be replaced along with a right front hub.. $1055) :(

It may be time to ditch the airride. Turn it off and replace the shocks with conventional ones.

Here's what I think happened: for some reason, the system thought it had a fault and thought it was too low. The system then worked overtime to lift and stiffen the truck (hard ride) and eventually burned itself out (more normal ride but no adjustment).

I'd just turn the system off, take out or leave the compressor, and get conventional shocks.
