Hey all, I've been lookin around the forum for info on the location of my Air Silencer. I've been wanting to remove it because I just got my exhaust done too. I've found info on how to remove it from air boxes, but my truck has the air cone/cylinder located towards the front passenger side that is ported to the right front wheel fender. Any help on location/removal would be appreciated! Thanks!

BTW I have a 96 explorer xlt:exp:

Do you have the flat filter or the round filter?

If you have the flat filer the silencer is on the front of the air box up against the radiator support. It looks like a duck call.

from what im gathering i believe this is like my buddys truck was. the silencer tube is basically inside the fender and the fender must be removed to fully remove it.

i removed my air silencer on my 01 sport it took me like 10 to 15 min to remove it.

On a second gen all you need to do is pull up on the air box. There are four pins that are held in by rubber grommets. Tow on the bottom & two in the fender. It can be a little hard if it's never been off.

Once it's out pull out the silencer and press the air box back in.

Lets understand the engineering and purpose of parts first before we start modifying. I would not remove the part in question ("duck bill" looking thing) - that is a velocity stack or a bellmouth, specifically designed to induce laminar flow into the air box which allows the engine to "breath" easier. There is a reason why jet engines have the same design in their intake.

On the other hand, if the intake has a parasitic chamber that is placed somewhere on the intake tube (between the throttle body and the MAS), that is a helmholtz resonator - do not remove that either because it increases the intake tube volume, essential when you launch from a start. The colored parts in the image below are all helmholtz resonators - strategically placed in the intake system:

I have the round cone shaped air filter. I believe that it goes into the fender because I think that my air box is more like an air cylinder.

I do not think it is the bellmouth tube going into the fender because that is what brings in outside cold air. It may be something inside the tube though that constricts/restricts air?

Not sure, what do you guys think.

There is no reason to remove this other than here say, the engine is set up in a manner to produce suffecient HP as designed. The design is setup to allow kool air instead of hot air from engine heat. Unless you are planning to do some upgrades to the engine that requires more air intake, I would leave it alone.

The only way I would mess with it is if I was doing a CAI and that would be the only way to go. Take for what it is and leave it alone.

This is not to belittle you or your knowledge level, but reading your initial and updated comments, it seems to me that you do not know even why or what this would do by removing it. So the best bet is to leave it until you do a CAI.

Just my 2 cents worth.

The reason I am doing this is just for the sound of it (I've heard it produces a better exhaust note). I do not mind if you belittle me...its a forum. I am not trying to say I know alot....that is why I am asking my question. My 2 cents..... and I would do a CAI if I had the cash.

And I know what it does....it silences the intake system but at the same time causes slight restriction.

Glad you can take advice.

The amount of restriction from that silencer is minimal and you would not even know the difference.

Like I said before, I would leave it alone for the efforts it would take vs gain. There is none.
