Yesterday the airbag light started flashing whenever i started the explorer. It flashes three times pauses and then flashes twice. After that it stays off for about a minute and then stays on for as long as the truck is running. Im thinking the airbag and all of its components are too complicated and im going to end up taking it to the dealer.

There may be a problem with one of the impact sensors that's setting it off.

You think it could be frozen. It started on the day of the first big snowstorm and my x was outside for all of it.

It's possible that one of the sensors froze shut and was frozen shut when you started it up. If that happens, when your Explorer SRS computer goes through it's start-up diagnostics routine, it will throw the code. If your SRS computer sets a code, it takes 256 code free restarts before it will turn the light off. The alternative is that Ford can clear it with their NGS Star tester. You can't clear it with a generic OBD-II scanner unfortunately. If it has since warmed up, you can try turning your ignition on and off 256 times to see if the light stays off. If it does, then the problem has corrected itself (probably by thawing out). That was how I ended up clearing my flashing air-bag light after I started my Explorer with the air-bag fuse removed. I un-plugged the connector to my fuel shut-off switch after the first 15 or 20 cycles though since I got tired of listening to my fuel pump energize each time. It took about an hour to do and was cheaper than going to Ford. I had the advantage of knowing there was nothing wrong with my air-bags though once I put the fuse back in. Disconnecting the battery won't help either since the SRS has it's own internal backup power source. If it doesn't clear with the on/off sequence then there is still a problem that will likely result in a trip to Ford.

Thanks for all the info. Im going to call the dealer Monday morning to see how much it would cost to get it cleared, if it is too much i will sit in the driveway and try starting the X 256 times. Do i actually have to start the engine or can i just turn the ignition switch to "on"?

Just turn the ignition on (where the dash lights light up) and wait for the air-bag light to start flashing. Once it does, it has gone through its SRS diagnostics routine. Turn the key off and back on again. You don't need to start it. Disconnect the plug at your emergency fuel pump shut-off switch under the edge of the carpet on the passenger side at the front of the vehicle. If you don't your fuel pump will pump for a second or so each time you turn the key on.

Dealer said it would be about $90 if just the code needed to be reset. I will be sitting in the driveway probably this saturday counting to 256. If that doesnt work then off she goes to the dealer. Thanks for all the advice.
