Aircon compressor cuts in and out

My 1998 aircon compressor cut in and out about every 30 secs when first turned on. Seems to settle a bit once I have travelled a few miles. Any ideas?

Sounds like it's low on freon.

I found out this is normal as there is a cycling valve that shuts the compressor off when the liquid line gets near freezing. Gas was down a little. Thanks for your reply
