Made a quick stop by Inchworm Gear today, and was chatting with the owner, and he told me a little secret.. Inchworm Gear is in process of developing adaptors that will set a Toyota 5spd transmission (of your choise) behind your ford ! now a transimisson we can count on and many different transfercase option! i will be bringing him by a scrapped M50D i have laying around so they can produce an adaptor to link the 4.0 to a Tacoma 5spd.

Now remember, they are just now getting into the development stages, but it sounds very promissing, and he is looking forward to opening up to more than toyota!

Not exciting news to me. I've never had trouble with any of my 5 speeds. Now a 6 speed transmission would be something different.

Well, that's cool.. but toyota t-cases are passenger side drop.

A 3550 to V6 adapter would be great since AA makes a 3550 to 1350/54 t-case adapter.

check out inchwormgear.com, they make all different types of adapters and t cases to fit what ever you need/ have. the tacoma t case is driver drop as well as there "lefty" t case.

World Class T5 are strong, at least all I've heard about them they are.

T5s are supposed to be strong and good transmissions. I'm not sure exactly how easy it would be to bolt one up behind a Explorer 4.0L. Ford Australia uses T5s behind their 4.0L sport cars. I'm assuming the Ford Australia 4.0L is based on the Ford US 4.0L but haven't been able to confirm it.

I wouldn't exactly call a t5 strong. Ask any Mustang owner... ;)

IMHO, I'm not sure a manual transmission adapter is a wise venture.

If the focus market is off-roaders, most off-roaders actually prefer an automatic transmission as the right hand is often taken up by the transfer case shifters in the tricky spots. Perhaps looking into adapters for the famous automatics is a better path.

For me, I would rather see Inchworm develop an adapter to mate the GM Powerglide to the 4.0 SOHC. This transmission is very light and very short, allowing for longer driveshafts and better pinion angles. It also has a huge base of after-market support with components widely available.

I know there are adapters for the 700r4 to be bolted to the 4.0 which is a strong trannie, I know cause I ran one 100+ miles with NO fluid in it and all it did was drop 4th gear, the other 3 were fine.

I agree about the auto. I was going to ask if there was any other trany's you could swap in. With the 700R4 what do you need to swap? Converter, flex plate and the adaptor plate? Also can you still use the stock T case.

Whoops he was talking about T5 transmissions and I was talking about T56 transmissions. I meant Ford Austrailia uses T56 transmissions.

that means yota axles :) the perfect width!

I think most yota axles are passenger drop, which means redoing the entire exhaust system cauz the Explorer's exhaust is on the passenger side which would interfere with the front driveshaft. Moving the exhaust will be difficult because the gas tank is on the passenger side.

It might be easier to buy a Toyota...

It would be interesting to see an adapter for a CVT. I don't know how much stress one of those could handle.

Not a lot. That's why so far they've mostly been in smaller cars.

might just be me, but it seems like a lot work for not much reward (adapting the toyota tranny to a 4.0 ford...!?!)

why not just swap a 5.0/302 V8 and 5 speed from an 80's F-150 into your explorer. I have two of these F-150's gathering dust right now. might just be my next project. ;)

pumpkin is on the passenger side

:rolleyes:how dose that work?

Depends upon the T-5...I have a World Class T-5 in my '66 Mustang and it's plenty strong. IIRC, it's rated to handle 450 crank hp.
