My mom bought this when i turned 14 and i drove her and the family everywhere in that car because she was in a terrible accident and was scared to drive. (i put 30,000 miles on it). I got it August 17, 2009 when she upgraded and i put 8,000 miles on it until September 17,2009. It was the Thursday night of homecoming week and i had 4 friends with me coming back to town and we came around a gravel turn when she kicked around in the ditch and i rode it out until it finally tipped. We slid on the driver side until it rolled and the LR caught the ditch and cartwheeled us onto the passenger side, then we eased onto all 4 wheels in the ditch. (It was a 6 foot deep ditch). Minor injuries were all that happened but the car was a total loss cause there was no undamaged piece of metal on that car. The cause of the problem was a LOCKED UP REAREND. Not cause i am 16 year old driving so don't start with that.http://s747.photobucket.com/albums/xx115/fordnut_1993/

Be thankful nobody got hurt. Vehicles can be replaced, lives can't.

As for the rearend locking up, I haven't experienced that in all my days.

Wow- I'm glad to hear that everyone was pretty much ok! It also sounds that given the circumstances of the crash (i.e. locked up rear end), I think you did a pretty damn good job!

Glad everyone is ok, and kudos on the good driving.

The locked up rear end sounds like the diff may have failed, perhaps it was leaking fluid and was never refilled?

Either way, cars can be replaced. Just be glad these trucks are very good in accidents. I've seen way worse on this site, some where no one should have survived, and they've come out with minor injuries.

i held it sideways in the ditch for about 150 feet until it flipped. My mom rolled hers doin 75 and rolled about 6 times with little sis in the front with her. They made it through fine and a trucker watched it happen and busted out the side windows to get them out instantly once they stopped. You gotta love these explorers, even if their top heavy they hold up DAMN GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess the thing that shocked me the most was that you put 8000 miles one it in ONE month!!

ive put 10K on my 98 in 2 months lmfao.

And you're sure you didn't have Firestone tires on it? :P

Glad to hear everyone is ok. I hope homecoming was fun til then.

We took a roadtrip every weekend and day trips almost everyday as long as the friends helped pitch in for gas. hahaha. Homecoming was good because that friday night i dumped a motor in my 1965 ford truck and drove my girl to the dance in it. and still drivin it today daily until i get another explorer

Didn't you say that you were going around a curve on a gravel road?

If you went half the length of a football field sideways in a ditch then you were moving.

150 ft off the road... how fast were you going into that curve? Just tell the truth, we're not your mother. I'm going to guess over 80.

As wet as it has been around here, I wouldn't be surprised at that distance. When the grass is slick, you would be surprised how far you can go.

The good thing is that no one got flipped out a broken window...I noticed that the airbags didn't even pop.

And I agree, at least no one got seriously hurt. Vehicles are short-term...friends, memories, and regrets are forever

i was doin 40. honest to god 40. it was really slick grass in the ditch

Listen my friend. It is impossible for a vehicle, especially an explorer, to slide sideways through a ditch for half the length of a football field at 40 MPH. That undercarraige would be grabbing everything.

Years ago I lost a monte carlo at 85 mph and I spun around about 175 ft through an open field. And that was with just the tires grabbing grass.

If I read his original post correctly, it was on its side...not the bottom. Not much to grab the dirt with other than the mirror.

What he said was he held it sideways for 150 feet until it flipped onto the drivers side. He then said it continued to slide until it caught and flipped onto the passenger side and eventually ended back on the tires.

I spent many years working for insurance companies investigating claims and I've seen some good ones.
