2021 Ford Explorer XLT
Hey everyone, I have a 2021 Ford Explorer XLT with 24,000 miles on it. I had a recall for “Rear Axle main bolt fracture.” so I took it to the dealership and got it replaced. On my way back home it drove a little funny and it was shifting hard between drive selector, and then “Hill assist, ABS, pre-collision, warning, advancetrac service” lights came on. So I called the dealership and they said to bring it back. On the way back all the lights disappeared by themselves, so just drove home that day. A few days later, it’s still drove a little funny, so I pulled it in the shop I work at, and found out that they installed the new bolt and bushing, but the bolt was never actually attached to the pumpkin. So I tightened it up myself, and as I’m looking around the tires, also found out that they never completely tightened the driver rear axle nut. So I tighten that up as well. I pull the vehicle out to do a figure 8 in the parking, and all the lights come back on. I got it towed to the dealership, they said when they pulled the vehicle in the shop all the lights disappeared, they double checked all the connections, couldn’t find anything obvious, they also checked the battery, which turned out good. I picked it up and a week later all the lights are on again.

Update: I just picked the vehicle up and they said they couldn’t find anything. Everything was tight and in place. Also that the technician who originally started the recall process cut his hand while working, so he had to leave and the person they had pick up the work was a newbie, supposedly suspension specialist (the one who didn’t tighten the bolt they replaced and a axle nut). I asked what should I do if this happens again and they said “as much as we hate to say it, take it to another dealership as this is beyond us at this point.

Sounds like you need to find another dealership and report this one to Ford. Ford has a 'Hotline' for techs to use to get assistance.
Did they scan for trouble codes (DTC)? If not, some stores like Auto Zone will do it for free. A code would be very helpful in trying to determine the issue. Some members with some of those warnings found it was a faulty wheel speed sensor.
Good luck and let us know how you make out.
Wishing you a Happy New Year!

Thank you for your time and reply. They said they scanned it for codes and “it showed the wheel speed sensor fault when pulled in, but when diagnosed, the sensor was reading fine.” And I have a feeling it is the VSS considering the axle nut wasn’t tight and it drove for while, so it probably damaged it in some way, shape or form. It’s gonna sit in airport parking for a month, but will surely update if something comes up.
Once again, thank you and you have a happy new year as well!

Could just be a coincidence that the halfshaft speed sensor is starting to fail. It can fail intermittently before it drops dead. The rear axle recall has been a disaster for many but in this case, it may not necessarily be related if that's what the code that keeps popping up. The speed sensor plugs into the front differential so is nowhere near the rear, and it's also a common failure.

As far as your dealer, you better heed their advice and find a different dealer.
