So we got an 05 xlt sport v6/gas recently. The trans was shot so I had it rebuilt and I understand the automatics on these can be a weak point so it's nice to know that should be good to go.

It is throwing a CEL with P0401 so a new EGR valve is sitting on the table ready to be installed. I did the tires, got the front rotors and pads changed; doing the rear along with the parking brakes. Hubs/bearings seem ok. Brake fluid is black and a complete purge is going to be done. Oil change/filter done along with replacing the pan gasket to squash a leak. There is only a tiny bit of oil weeping from the valve covers and I have no plans to bother with that. Changing the diff oil and transfer case is on the list.

Some front suspension work was done to pass inspection; minor parts, new ball joints/struts and it tracks great. New air filter is in, fuel filter is sitting next to the egr waiting to go in. Getting a pcv valve since it's probably original . The thermostat was replaced at 90 something K. No leaks, looks good.

The cruise control is inop and it wasn't the switch on the wheel. There is a pressure sensor on the master cylinder which is supposed to be a common issue with CC failure and a new one is on the way. When that shows up I have the brake pedal switch to go in as well. If anyone has other suggestions for troubleshooting CC I'm all ears.

The headlight switch is twitchy and so is the high beam switch - I have new ones ready to go in and hopefully it isn't a problem somewhere else. There are new headlight housings on the way because the screws are rusted and stuck and the aim is off.

I want this thing to be DONE and the clock set as close to zero as possible (short of a total engine rebuild) so the question is, what else should I do? Anything else to clean/replace/refill to make sure this thing keeps ticking over?

coolant, tstat (for the 4.0s), replace the tstat housing with the metal Simmonz autosport units, while youre at it do the timing tensioners and maybe change plugs/wires depending on miles... thats about it i can think of!!!

Ill add ^^^∆∆
Diff fluid trans fluid all fluids
I'd change the tensioners only if you have noise
Change your oil OFTEN with synthetic only
I'd Change out the front o2 sensors spark plugs and wires ....get your mileage back...
And a fuel filter

Fix the valve cover gaskets its going to get worse

i think in. his new member into thread he mentioned diffy and hes getting the trans worked on, so i presume new fluid... and doesnt ford spec a 75k tensioner interval? or am i hallucinating o_O

No. Members tend to replace them at that mileage for preventative maintenance
I say if it ant broken no need to fix it
Keep em clean with oil changes

I haven't been able to find a actual spec on that
If someone has it show me please

oh ok ;) i didnt replace mine until 310 k:oops:

Little more information

Yeah I had the trans rebuilt. Buying any car at 100k+ miles the trans is gonna be a concern sooner or later and it's kind of a relief not to have to worry about it. Apparently the tstat was done TWICE in it's life and looks good but it's still the plastic housing. If it goes again it's getting a metal one.

Spark wires are newer but haven't checked the plugs though I can't imagine why anyone would bother doing wires and not plugs. I'll pull one at some point since anything is possible. Diff oil and radiator flush are on the list.

No timing chain rattle not gonna worry about that for now. This version of the engine is supposed to have fixed the earlier problems with that. I went through the maintenance guide and no mention of ever checking it.

@donalds why just the upstream O2 sensors?

The upstream sensors are for engine management
The more accurate the sensors are better the computer can make fuel adjustments not much but there is a difference in gas

I put new motorcraft sensors in both explorers
Just runs better
