- 2004 ford explorer
i recently purchased a new highout out alt for my 2004 ford explorer 4.6l it was for a 2005-2008 f150 but i was told it would work for my explorer and to put it into short terms it didn’t the bottom mount lined up by i had to modify the upper bracket to make it work, but now i’ve run into the issue of the wiring, it’s got different plugs, so i went to my local junkyard and got a plug off the f150 but my problem is that my explorer has 2 wires bigger orange and smaller green and red but the f150 has 3, bigger orange, green and red, and green and orange, now i played around with it a bit to try and get it to charge but the only way i could get it to charge is if i had the orange wires hooked up and if i had the green and red from my explorer hooked up to the green and orange from the alternator, and the green and red i had to ground to “excite” the alternator but the problem is it still only charges around 13.6, but if i keep tapping the green and red wire from the alt to ground then it will jump up to 14-15 somtimes(with the check battery light still on), now im just wondering if anyone knows where i can hook the green and red wire from the alt to get it to properly charge, or if i need some kind of external voltage regulator, or if i can take the regulator out of my old alt and put it in to my new one, or if it just won’t work which i really hope isn’t the case because i spent too much on the alternator, somone please help me!!
