I've got a 2000 2Dr Explorer, Vin X. Not sure exactly which motor is in it. It's a 4.0L. Appears the internal regulator is taking a dump. Gonna go junkyard hopping next week and see what I can find. What years/models Fords have the same alternator that I can use on mine?

Your best bet is the partsamerica.com advanceautoparts.com site. They have an interchange guide for every part. Its interesting to see how some battery cable on your explorer will fit a 1949 Pontiac or 2001 Bentley rolls royce!

I have this same problem on my 2000 sport, its a SOHC .. I tested the alternator running and it only showed the battery voltage which was 12.3v and then 11.87v with engine running... then I removed the alternator and cleaned the brushes and inspected everything , then installed it and got up to 13v , still 1v short but it worked for about 30 mins and then died again ,looks like you need a new alternator or regulator , you need the same 130 amp model parts , the other parts don't fit but given the $5 cost of a regulator compared to the cost of junkyard alternator I would try the regulator first..

in the end when its running you should have about 14.25 volts..

At idle, the alternator was around 14.25V. However, just revving the engine to approx 3k rpm, the voltage would drop to 12.3V, and that's without any kind of load on the motor. How can I swap the regulator? I was under the impression these are internal regulators.

Regulator is removable. Its where the wires go in on the back of the alternator. A name brand new regulator is expensive. Probably better to get a new alternator.

if you take the alt out the reg is removable , just take the shield off with 2-3 screws and then reg is held in with a couple of small torx screws.

An OHV 4.0 engine needs one from those engines only, 95-01 would be best. The 91-94's do swap, but the power(diode) is not as good. The other 302 and SOHC's use the same alternator.

OHV Alternator to SOHC Engine

Old thread but for those that use the search function..... I was driving my 00 when the alternator up and quit and needed to get the truck home. With a spare OHV alternator I put it on the truck, two things,

1. The center top bolt and front lower bolt will bolt up fine but the OHV alternator mounts are widened a little more on the backside so you will not be able to use all 3 bolts.
2. The OHV also has a little plug that the SOHC does not have.

This would be fine as a temporary fix if needed, but I do not recommend using it for an extended period of time. More than likely your battery light will be on at the dash but ran great to get it home at least.
