so it looks like the alternator is toast... it's not charging the battery, so everytime I turn the truck off, it won't start without a boost..

I'm also pretty sure the battery is toast too..

So.. .what I want to know is...

Can I use a V6 alternator in place of the V8 one? are they compatible?

I think they are Si.

I think it might be the battery, it starts from a boost, but the gauge on the dash is on the low end of the reading.

I'm getting more than 13 on the meter at the battery terminals, but as soon as I turn it over, it drops below 12 and the truck won't start..

So, I'm thinking that the battery isn't taking the charge and that's why it don't start....?

Turn the engine off and turn the headlights on for like 3-5 seconds then re-check the voltage at the battery again.. If your battery is below 12, then yea may not be charging.. once you get it started pull the negative battery to see if it stalls.. Thats an old timer way of finding if the alternator is bad

V6 SOHC alternator swaps right into a 5.0 setup. Been there, done that.

well now... I think I'll do this tomorrow then... I've got 1 or 2 knocking around... ;)

do I use the SOHC pulley for this swap? or use the pulley on the 5.0 instead?
