I'm my 98 4.0l Sohc the battery is die very quickly if the lights are left on even after a couple mins ... But it will start with no problem even after a couple days of sitting .... I hooked up a meter while the motor is running the voltage is 13.03v DC so does this mean the battery is shot or is the alternator shot ????

Thanks
Jay Sr

Where exactly did you test the voltage? How old is the battery?

Working alternators in my exp pump out 14v.

I tested off the battery and I know the alternator is suppose to charge the battery at 14v to 15v according to one book.. So I am guessing the the apt was shot ... But plan on getting the battery tested too..

A bad battery could put more of a drain on the alternator to keep the electrical system running, so that's why it's showing a 13 volt charge. A good battery with clean terminals will show 14 to 14.5 volts. Sometimes the charge will vary depending upon the load (stereo, headlights, wipers, defroster, etc) running simultaneously. Temperature & engine RPMs are also a factor.

What battery do you guys recommend ?????

I can get a Autocraft Gold for $100 or so ??

Also what is the difference between the Autocraft Gold vs Autocraft Gold SD??

What battery do you guys recommend ?????

I had a Sears Die Hard Gold that lasted 12 years, and the only reason I replaced it was that I figured nothing lasts forever.

I ended up buying a Kirkland/Costco battery because Sears has been closing stores and going out of business for 20 years now and I don't want to get stuck with a worthless warranty.
