Well, today the infamous 1st + 2nd gear whine started on my '99 sport (5r55e). 57.3k on the truck. tranny fluid has been changed around every 10-15k by the previous owners. This fluid should have around(read: guesstimate) 8k on it. (Its still bright red and seems perfect on the dipstick)

According to what I've read and Ford bulletins its the planetary gears going crazy (Either the front, the back, or both. they dont require a complete rebuild according to Ford)

Well, I was thinking instead of just tossing a stock part back in, would it be worth while to get a new gear and have it flame hardened/powder coated? or would this be a waste?

My other options are
A) Just replace the part (and/or complete rebuild, I don't have that type of $ though)
B) try to rig another transmission into it.

I'm not in a large hurry right now, I flipped overdrive off (2nd gear is really just 1st with overdrive on) so I just get minor whining in first before it shifts, gonna drop the pan and look for any metal next weekend and flush it out.

Ideas suggestions are greatly appreciated :)

Thanks,
Keith

only happens in 1st or 2nd(1st+OD) (Truck is 2wd, shoulda mentioned that sorry.)

All other gears don't do it. I can make it happen on cue.

also according to some datalogging software, which I albeit I don't know if this would have anything to say on it. my speedo has somehow become 4mph fast.

no error codes have been set.

I'll probably have a friend of mine that works at a trans shop ride along to hear, although he thinks its the trans as well just from talking to him about it.

thanks for the reply, I'll definitely check into the torque converter though. Maybe wire up some microphones and put them on the parts and record it.

My personal opinion is to put in an M5OD 5 speed, never fight another auto again. Just my $0.02.

Thats a good bit of work though isn't it?

Since the PCM will have seizures trying to shift an auto you'd probably need a new PCM.

How much do you think it would run all together? Just outa curiosity and my being to lazy to research myself. (That is the mazda 5spd isn't it?)

Yes, it's the mazda. Not sure about PCM though, what year did they stop making manual sploders? Shouldn't a manual PCM from the same year 4.0 ranger work too? It should the same length as your current tranny. Price all depends on where you get the stuff. I picked up a good M5OD with 20K on it for $250.

Hmm, well Ill look into after I get it repaired now...

throttle went down never came back and kept going down farther it seemed.

started spinning pulling onto a 4lane highway, kept it somewhat strait and smacked a curb, messed up the right tire/tie rod pretty good it seems.

:/

only thing I can think of is the cruise control did it. I can see if it got stuck but it kept going down till the truck was at WOT.

I have been looking into converting my '94 to a manual. Some guys change the PCM some don't, but on a 99 I would. I am planning on swapping the harness and computer from a donor truck along with the trans and pedal brackets etc.

I think that the 2-doors were available with a manual trans till the last year of production in 2001 or 2002.

I don't know about your cruise problem. I never heard that before. Maybe the throttle linkages stuck or stuck on something? Thats weird.

Yea, I've been wanting a manual for a long time, can't stand autos at all

From what I read on these cruise control boxes, although unnoficial (ford denies it, yada yada yada) there very touchy to radio interference.

been quite a few cases of them just randomly setting it to WOT.

Also, I had a unmarked cop infront of me and a state trooper about 300 feet down the road so I can imagin plenty of radio intereference there.

anyway, outside of that. I really would like to switch to manual, I just don't think I'll be able to afford it. after all this jarring around the transmission isnt whining anymore and I wobbled the truck home in 1st-2nd. I'll change the fluid when i get the $ for it (maybe not this weekend but next now) and maybe itll stay alive for a few more thousand miles :)

P.S. Thanks you guys, this forum is a massive help. so much knowledge and helpfull people here.

I would be willing to bet a manual swap would be cheaper than rebuilding your tranny, especially if you can find a parts rig and if you have something else to drive while the sploder is down. I get lots of my parts from parts rigs, like my 4.10 axles and then sell off all the parts I don't need and make a good profit and still get better axles.
