I am having problems with my autohubs clicking. I know that they will need to be replaced so I've decided to switch to manual hubs. While looking for them, I've searched alot of the forums and on the internet but it seems that the aftermarket hubs for sale are only up to a 1994 year exploder.

I would like to know where to buy the hubs and conversion kits for a 1996 XLT 4.0L. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Your explorer does not have auto locking hubs like the first gens so you cannont put manual hubs in.The clicking is probably a cv or u joint that's worn out.

Yup, probably a CV. Can't switch to manual hubs since you don't have the auto hubs to begin with.

Well, kick me in the arse now...I thought it had autohubs! So if no A/Hs, what actually locks in the wheel? And if CV, will buying the halfshafts include the hub locking mechanism in it or do I have to replace the whole hub / bearing kit...(at $200 each)?

Thats funny you say CVs....I just posted another thread about having possibly bad CVs and causing a vibration!

Thanks for the enlightening!

Maybe I should have said that the clicking is more like a popping but not a crunching sound. When I go over a bump or turn it pops but not while driving straight.

When my CVs went out on my eclipse, it sounded like a grinding and harder popping sound while driving straight and while turning thats why I didnt think it was CVs on the exploder but I guess that it makes sense, over a bump or turn, the stress on the CVs are changing the rotational value and causing different angles than the straight ahead driving would. Maybe the CVs on the eclipse were just more worse off than in the XLT are now when they finally got replaced.

Thanks again!

Ditto. You do not have auto hubs. Case closed. You have a vacuum actuated center-axle disconnect that breaks the front axle shaft in 2wd in order to (theoretically, at least) allow the front diff and driveshaft to stop turning. (In reality, that doesn't happen)

Now, if your noise is only when going over bumps and the suspension articulates, look at the suspension components: Ball joints, tie rods, control arm bushings, sway bars and links.... the usual list of suspects.

I suspect CV joints but thisis without driving the vehicle.

On 2nd gens your hubs are always locked (just like an AWD vehicle).

when diagnosing a vibration there are ALOT of things that can cause it, starting with tire balance, inflation, alignment, worn parts and then the rest of the drivetrain, including driveshaft balance, trans and engine mount condition, worn suspension parts, etc.
