2012 Explorer limited
I’ve read a ton of threads on this but have never found a clear solution and now with the Canadian winter kicking in would really like an answer.

I have the 2012 limited with the heated/cooled seats the passenger side works fine and gets plenty warm enough

The driver side however is lukewarm at best on both the base and back, I’ve seen retrofit piping for later models but nothing for this year. I spoke to ford dealer who said they’d have to test (at $159 an hour) but it sounds like it could be heating elements need replacing (around $800 for the pair for parts alone) just wondering if anyone else had to theirs sorted or done way cheaper, I’m not sure how to take the seat apart to check everything out but I did clean the filter in the base to make sure that wasn’t an issue.

Howdy There is not an element for heat or cool. There should be a Thermal Electric Device system (TEDS). It is sort of like the coolers you plug in one way they cool the other way they heat. It really is pretty easy to take the seats apart take a look at this link to red about them. Cooling Seats issue and TSB feedback - Ford F150 Forum - Community of Ford Truck Fans You cloud check with Forscan to see if there is an issue, you will need to buy a $35.00 bluetooth dongle, which will allow you to test and reset almost all the modules in your Explorer. With all that said I would unzip the seat back and see if anything became unpluged or a breather tube became blocked. Then I would test with Forscan to see if it passed.

What parameters or checks in Forscan should I be looking for to determine that status of the seats?

Hi Shane. Here is a picture from another thread I found using the 'Search function; 2016 Cooled Seats
I know there is also one that shows how to remove the seat.

Not sure what you are asking? There is a Tab that allows you to test each module in Forscan. Also read the DTC's which if a TEDS unit is having problems should set a DTC. Now do you have a 2013 GT500?

Ok, so you can't test the status of TEDS, but a failure will result with a DTC.
In regards to a 2013 GT500, unfortunately I don't own one, but have been able to borrow one from time to time from a coworker and loved every single sec of it.

As far as I know you should be able to test the TEDS unit in Forscan.
I was going by your user name for the GT500 question. I own one and am always on the look out for other owners.

Thanks for the reply, not sure what you mean by unzip as I looked at the back and it’s one big stitched together pieces as far as I can see on mine

Kind of reviving this as we went for a quick fix of a plug in heated cushion to get by however, it’s been -23c this week so it would be nice if the seat actually worked on the starter like its supposed to.

So I’ve been reading posts again, all the seat guru threads refer to 2015+ models which I guess were a different set up. I’m not sure on the part numbers but it does say you can replace the fan assembly for the TEDs system reasonably easy so that maybe an option to explore as the fan seems to start and almost instantly stop.

I had codes scanned on the explorer for another issue and nothing came up for the seating issues, I have a friend who’s a ford mechanic so maybe I’ll speak to him a little more on the subject.

There is one more thing you can check on your own. Under your seat there is a filter on the Intake tube. It is around an inch or so round. Take it off and see if that helps. If it is plugged up it will not pull air into the system.

Here is what you are looking for
2012 explorer drivers seat air filter - Google Search:

I did check the filters initially and they looked clean, will try and run it without to see if the fan stays in though just in case
