I recently posted an Explorer for sale in this forum for one of my managers. Its no longer for sale. He totaled it yesterday. One of his Firestones had the tread separate at 75 on the freeway. It was not one of the recalled tires. A completely different Firestone model!

EVERYONE GET RID OF YOUR FIRESTONES!!!!!!!

Is anyone else getting sick of hearing about another person almost losing there life!! You'd be safer just drivin on your rims then firestones.

Was your manager seriously hurt? I hope not!! I hate reading stuff like this. It just makes me mad at how dumb a tire company can be. Sorry to hear about the accident and I hope everyone is ok.

Studdedx, I agree completely. I still see so many Ex's and other vehicles cruising around on Firestones, and wonder what the hell they are thinking, or not thinking!?! The tire co. may be dumb, but these people are worse!

Lemme guess

Left rear? Just wondering.

Ranger X harshin on the dead...

He had the originals changed from the recalled ones to these others that Firstone supplied. If he had the chance to do it all over again I'm sure he would. Unfortunately, he won't get that chance now. The irony is that my other manager was going to buy that Explorer. He dodged a bullet this time.
We trust so many of the big companies to give us products that are safe. Even when they screw up we trust that they will fix the mistakes even if it is just for fiscal reasons. How many of our cancers are due to ingredients that are put in our food these days? From cell phones. From the sun. How many smokers are still out there committing suicide? How many young people are trusting the tattoo artists and body piecers to use sanitized needles and non-carcinogenic dyes? What else do they put in our vitamins and so called natural supplements? No one ever drives drunk, or tired do they? I know that none of us puts too much weight on our vehicles, or tires that over power our vehicle's braking ability...
We all believe it won't happen to us. Look at all those nuts driving up and down steep rocks and hillsides trusting their vehicles to keep them safe...

It was the driver's front tire that came apart.
Now I need another manager.

rick, im sorry to hear about your manager.

rangerx, i agree with you. people say "i dont have time to ge the tires changed right now" and until they do, its the "it wont happen to me" syndrome.

rick makes a good point, however. we rely on these major corporations for our safety, and its a shame to say that to most of them, the #1 priority is $.

At the same time, it's not an issue of not having the time to change the tires. Money, i think, is a major issue. Yes, some of you may be thinking, "But you bought a $30,000 vehicle!". What about those of us who bought the vehicle used? I bought my 95 just recently for about CDN$15,000. It was pretty much all i could fork out, and i thought that the tires were fine since it wasn't a recalled tire. I wasn't able to get my tires changed due to financial reasons, and just got them changed by Ford under the recall program. I'm lucky that i'm in Canada, where the major factor (heat) is not as prominent as in the US. Needless to say, i feel much better now that i'm riding on Michelins. I have never used Firestones in my life, and probably never will.
Nevertheless, let us not forget that not everyone is stubborn, stupid or irresponsible. Instead, be reminded of how many people people can be victims of circumstances.

Rick,
I am sorry to hear about your manager.

I am yet another one of those people still riding on the firestone wilderness AT's. I think a lot of us are in the same boat. we are not riding on them by choice or because we are "dumb" or whatever, we are riding on them because we can not et them replaced. All the tire places are out of any decent tires in my size. The tire places ask what type of vehicle I need the tires for and i say a ford explorer, they give a little laugh and say "Good luck trying to find tires for that any time soon" I called 4 or 5 tire places..got the same story from each, excvept one which had some crappy tire in stock, but those tires wouldn't be much better then the firestones. I am sure this is the reason many of us are still riding on the tires.

i keep my tires up to 38PSI and limit the loads I carry until I get my new tires. Unfortunatly i can not get the tires because they are out of stock. i just hope and pray one of mine doesn't decide to give out between now and the next 4 weeks or so.

Guys I received a letter from Ford saying that they are recalling ALL the Firestone Wildernes AT tires, regardless of size. (voluntary recall)

So go to the tire shop if you still have them and swap them for some BFG's.

The rules of exchange are the same as the previous recall.

Rick, I'm not sure what you mean by 'harshin on the dead', and the quote above. Did he die? If so, sorry, but you gave no hint in your original post.

What I meant by saying that people still on Firestones are worse than dumb, is that they are naive gambling fools, in denial that it could ever happen to Them. This Firestone issue has been out for a relatively long time now. EVERYONE has heard about it. They are making a conscious decision to keep driving on them. I view it as equal to Russian roulette.

Sorry if this seems cold to some, but it's the way I see it.

Hey 95XLT,

Did you put your name down on a waiting list? I put mine down at three dealerships, and just scored a hit 3 days ago. After waiting for about 3 weeks, i can now sleep better. Why don't you try that route as well since you're having problems getting tires on your own. The good part is that i managed to get Michelin Cross Terrain SUVs. Since the 95-97s have only 2 tires certified by Ford (the other being General Grabber AWs), i told the three dealerships not to call me unless they could get me the Cross Terrains. I added the fact that i worked with the local scout troop here and that i was looking for a new dealer to perform my servicing (i'm such a big fat liar on the second reason...hehe).

Well fella's, I have the 31X10.5 Firestone wilderness atIII on my X and finnally they put me on a waiting list to get my new tires, i am gonna go back and see if i can just get the money for new tires, but if i can't they said that they will replace them with 31X10.5's of another brand!

I never argue with the law! (RangerX)

Just yankin your chain there Ranger! Don't shoot!
Just playing the Devil's Advocate.

I partially agree with you actually, although I can't fault them for playing the odds. Like I said before, we all do things that are not in our best interests. Look at how many people still eat at Jack in the Box. They killed people too. (I know, I know, you don't eat meat so it was a poor example!)
Eventually one of us will get seriously hurt on a 4x4 trip and our good friends and neighbors will say "I told you so"...
Now, where are my cigars...

Keep the shiny side up!
Rick

I agree, we all are playin' the odds. Two rollos and no injuries, how lucky am I?

Olive drab paint means there ain't no shine! ;)

In that case "Keep the rubber side down!"
Rick

I missed out on the recall. Had an alignment done and of course the shop pointed out 10 other things that needed to be done including tread separation on the firestone's. I had them replaced within the week at Big O in Phoenix with the BFG All Terrains. About a month later the recall came out. Big O had 90 days same as cash so the wallet factor wasn't too bad. I can't believe firestone is even still in business. Even before the recall this site had threads on the firestones and that influenced me a lot. Thank God I never had a problem with them and thank you explorer freaks for raving about the BFG's and giving us all a heads up.

Mark B-
if you replaced your Wilderness ATs BEFORE May, 22, 2001 you can STILL get the refund. you need the orig. reciept and then call 1-866-300-1226, go to www.ford.com or swing by the local dealer.
