Just bought an 1992 extended cab 2wd dr, 2.3 w/ 8 plugs??, 5 sp. Has 134,000 miles on it and runs like a champ. Do these trucks have shocks on the front? What's with the 8 plugs? I have a check engine light on, I suspect it has to dou w/ the thermo, temp seems to be a little low, advice? Bought this truck for gas miliage, my explorer wasn't making it past the gas pumps more than once a week, the wife's Mountaineer either for that matter! sorry I be rambling. Feels good to be retired and back in OHIO!!!!

I used to have a Nissan truck with a 4cyl that had 8 plugs. Something to do with getting better combustion, I think.

What do you mean, does it have shocks? Look and see. Or was that sarcasm about the rough ride?

Where were you in CA?

no, honest question, but does sound dumb, the truck has no shocks on the front. I was wondering if it was meant to be that way. i personnaly have never seen a car/truck that didn't use shocks, but... Left Cali about 4 months ago, lived in fairfield. How do these trucks hold up? what problems should i be on the lookout for? Thanks for replying

the old rangers had shocks up front... located near the coil buckets on the front suspension....

those engines had 8 plugs.....

Thanks, any problems I should be on the lookout for? Got a check engine light on, I checked and and it's still there! But I think it has to do with the thermo, as the temp gauge reads pretty low...advice from the more ranger knowledgeable than me crowd?

The 2.3 has 8 plugs for smog reasons. That same motor has been around since the early 70's. The 2.3 was the exact same block that was used in the Pintos and Mustangs. From what I understand that motor goes all the way late 50's and it was used in heavy machinery.

As far as problems with the motors. Its a pretty reliable engine I've got 130k on my 95 Ranger with a 2.3 and so far I've only changed the plugs, wires, timing belt, and a water pump. Do you know when the timing belt was last changed? If you do not it might be a good thing just to change since it is just a belt. Its been a good truck to me and I am not the type of person to do scheduled maintenance.. I think I changed the timing belt when it had 80k miles on it..

As far as the check engine light I know when I had the lights on my truck it was always due to something with the emissions.. You might want to go to the hardware store and pick up on of those sheap $30 code readers for a ford..
