'98 E V8 AWD
Well I guess I'm a transplant from the LincolnsVSCadillac forums... since I don't own a Lincoln anymore. My name is John and I am the previous owner of a 2002 Lincoln LS, black on cream leather with stock chrome 17's. Unfortunately, beauty doesn't repair engines, and that car needed at least $3000 worth of engine work, so I sold it to Carmax for $4000 and bought myself a 98 Eddie Bauer V8 AWD for $3500.

I'm not new to cars or working on them, my first car was an 88 Saleen Mustang convertible; I was under the hood of that car every other day. I was limited in the amount of repairs I could actually accomplish on the Lincoln, everything has a nice coating of plastic and it had a sensor for everything. I swear if I sneezed hard it would throw a code. Eight individual ignition coils, that have to be pulled out to get to the spark plugs, along with the valve cover covers! Everything, everything was a pain in the ass on that car. I'm glad to be rid of it, and I'm glad to have a car I can work on again. I popped the hood on the Explorer and took a nice long look... at the concrete I could see below the engine, the exposed spark plug wires, the nice easy to get to upper manifold. Then I saw the belt tensioner was about as far away from easy reach as God, but... all in all, I'm happy.

Ok, here's the car. I don't know how you guys look at miles here, over at LVC the lower miles the better, but maybe you guys are more forgiving. The truck has 174,000 miles. Blue and tan on medium prairie tan. It's in great shape, no dents or dings; little key scratch about 12 inches long on drivers rear quarter and the front bumper is bent down; Ima take a floor jack and a piece of 4x4 to it, hopefully bend it back up. Needs a console cover (obviously) .. ordered the recover kit off eBay, hopefully it works like they say it does. The kid I bought it from threw in a Pioneer head unit, about $125 from what I found online, even though the stock unit works fine. I wired the aftermarket in anyway, just because I want to plug my iPod straight up to the stereo. I yanked up the antenna, I don't really care if it goes up or down automatically, I just want it to go up and stay up; of course it was stuck down.

The autolamp was leaving the lights on for 5 minutes after I turned the truck off; kid I bought it from said sort of jiggle the switch on the mirror until it goes off. That got annoying after about 2 tries and I just unplugged the damn thing. Now I turn the headlights on like normal people.

I removed the front driveshaft because it needed u-joints on the front, and since it's AWD and I haven't figured out how to change that yet, I talked to my mechanic and I just figured I'd pull it and save some gas until I figure out how to wire it out of AWD, if that's possible. Front diff and transfer case are great; no worries there. Ima get a front end rebuild kit off eBay here in a couple weeks, it needs ball joints on the top and bottom pretty soon; I might as well do it all.

I replaced a noisy idler pulley yesterday, that gd belt tensioner is a pain in the ass to get to. I'll need an alternator before long too; it's got a little squeal to it.

All the electronics work; power mirrors seemed to stop working after I ran it through a car wash yesterday... no worries, they're set for me. Seats aren't cracked at all, a little worn, obviously, but no cracks or holes. Found bail release papers and a ticket for misdemeanor possession in the truck for the kid I bought it from, so I had a buddy run his police canine through it and sure enough, dog went nuts at the center console. Cop looked in and said he couldn't find anything, but the kid had, at one time, kept his dope in the center console and the dog was smelling the residual. Told me to clean it out real good and should be fine; no worries. I thought it was a good idea; I sure hell don't want to get pulled over for speeding and go to prison for a K of coke stashed in the back that wasn't mine.

Ok now the questions for you guys.

1. Where can I get odd switches; or rather switch covers and knobs... cruise control resume button and rear windshield wiper switches, for instance. I'm watching a dash panel on eBay; the one that wraps around the radio.. that will solve that problem and it will also give me a the 4x4 switch that leads into my next question.

2. In installing the radio, I found the four wire wiring harness that feeds that non-existent 4x4 switch that would be next to the radio. The molex connector plugs into a little plastic caddy on the back of the dash panel; plugs into air basically. Since I have this wiring harness, does it mean that I actually have all the capabilities of 4hi, 4lo, Auto or the brown wire mod? Did Ford actually take a normal Explorer, pull the switch and change the dash panel, and call it all wheel drive? If that's the case, I'll fix my front shaft and do the brown wire mod and call it a day. Please advise guys.

3. How do Explorer generations work in terms of interchangeability? For instance, my 02 LS would only work with parts from 00-02; the PCM was changed in 03 and nothing from the 03-06 vehicles would work in the previous generation. Can I get heated seats from a 99-00, for instance. I think that's the only option I don't have, but someone may know something I don't.

4. Can I re-dye my leather? Would I be better off paying someone to do it? How much roughly will I pay?

I think that's everything I can think of for now. I'm happy to be here, I love the truck, and I'm so looking forward to not only a car I can work on that doesn't cost me an arm and a leg when something breaks, but also the support and camaraderie of the guys and girls on this board. I'm a 22 year old college student in Greenville North Carolina, btw. Everyone have a great new year.

Welcome!

3rd generation 2002-2005.

Have fun!

Fellow poster,

Donner :)

Welcome fellow Carolinian, you've come to the right place for your X.

I'm not going to be able to answer all your ? especially the AWD ones but I'm sure somebody else will chime in.

You will be happy with the interchangability of not only the X but with Rangers, Sport Trax and Mountineers. You basicaly have 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation that do not mix but do in there style generation.

Keep looking threw this site and you will find lots of mods and maintenance tips that are very helpfull.

Enjoy and keep a look out for some meet and greats here in NC

um-excuse me
A 98 is a 2nd gen (1995-2001)
However the 5.0 v8 was only offered in 96-01
In late 97 Ford switched to gt40p heads-so for your engine you need 98-01 parts-

Welcome to the forum--

Welcome fellow LVCer!

I can help with a couple of your questions.

1) There are a couple venders on here that specialize in used explorer parts. Second generation specifically (yours.) Also there are several who have parts laying around or are parting explorers, me included.

2) There were no factory 4x4 options with the V8 engine. 2wd or AWD was it. Be carefuly parking on grades with your front drive shaft removed, it will roll on you. Set the parking brake. There are several threads on here about changing your AWD to Selectable 4x4, both manual and automatic. I did the manual because it's about 20x easier than the electric. Either your case or your drive shaft may be bad.

3) first gen = 91-94, second gen 95-01 with a slight change at 98 on some sensors, V8 heads/intake/EGR and 01-05 Sport-tracs/01-03 Sports use the same drive gear but different facias. Third Gen= 02-05 4 door explorers, Fourth Gen = 06+. Interchangability between generations is rare.

4) IDK, kind of wondered that myself.

Sorry your LS didn't work out so well for you. I'm still loving mine.

Welcome to Explorer Forum! I'm in Greensboro NC...for life, not school.:D

Don't get me wrong, I loved my LS and hated that I had to get rid of it, but nothing makes you fall out of love with a car quicker than 3 weeks of diagnosing smoke and filling parking lots with burnt oil every time you crank. I pretty much had either valve guide seals leaking and/or bad piston ring(s) that led to more problems because I didn't have $1500 to fix the original problem. Ending up having bad valves and lifters... I knew I would have about 5 grand in the middle of January, but I didn't think it was worth putting into a new engine, I'll just put this Explorer in tip-top shape.

Yes, about the parking brake. I thought I was going crazy the first couple of days I parked it... I'd come out of my house and swear I'd pulled up farther than that. Then I found out the Exp parks through the front wheels, and now I set the brake.

Also found out I have a pretty solid tranny apparently... they changed some things in 98... so that's good I guess. Thought my former Ford salesman friend was full of it when he told me not to get a pre-98 Explorer because of tranny issues.

So I have stock GT40 heads? That's kinda nice. Btw, this Explorer also has aftermarket duals, with what I think are the $20 Summit mufflers. It's not that loud... but how many horses/torque am I pushing with the stock headers, the GT40 heads, and the duals? I don't think there's an X or H pipe... think I should add one?

Thanks already.

John

Btw Scott, my sister just moved from Greensboro to Winston, she graduated UNCG and married and just moved. I've been in that town many a time.

Also, anyone have any comments on what I paid? Most people think I got a good deal, I think I got a good deal, what do you all think?

Lastly, my title, 05 warrior, I have an 05 Yamaha Roadstar Warrior. A little too cold to ride right now, but the awesome thing is now, I have something to tow it with.

I wouldn't say you got a great deal considering the miles but I would say you made a good choice. One thing I've noticed is that there are a ton of explorers on the road but you don't see that many in a junk yard thats not wrecked, and even the wrecked ones are stripped pretty quick.

Are you planning on keeping it stock or doing some mods and if so will you go street or off road?

welcome

I'll do some mods, mostly for street. I had an 88 Saleen, and I had a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee in the past. I modded almost $10,000 with the Mustang and I had the 4.7 V8 AWD with the Jeep, with some off-road mods, so I've had my speed and off roading fun and don't plan on spending a ton of money for either. Any mods I do to this truck will be practical, like a push bar and winch for those beach trips and some mountain camping, prolly upgrade the brakes and front end, I've got stock 2.73's on the rear end so I'm decently set for towing. I like to work on driving comfort in vehicles. I'll probably update the sound system, not with a bunch of subs or bass, not that I have anything against it, I just don't prefer it, but with quality speakers and amps so I can have quality sound. Very important to me... the Lincoln had 10 speakers plus two subs stock so I'm a little spoiled. I'll get the steering wheel controls for the aftermarket head unit, a decent alarm system, decent set of tires in a month or so, set up some sort of apparatus so I can plug my iPhone in to charge and run music to my head unit and mount it on the dash somewhere. I might get a good set of headers as well as a tranny rebuilt kit of some sort.

Me and the girl like to go to Ocracoke (NC ppl know what it is) in the summertime. You can park and camp anywhere on the 13 miles of beach. I've never had a vehicle to do that with since I've been with her, so I'm looking forward to getting it set up to do that kind of excursion. I'm sure you guys can help me figure out what I need to do to handle the explorer on the beach.

So I guess I'm not big on turning it into a monster truck or a speed demon, pretty much practical comfortable passenger aware mods. Looking forward to it.

John

I don't get to the beach too much but the first and only time I ever camped on the beach I almost lost the X out to sea. Scared the crap out of me!! Me and my brother went out onto the point at Cape Hatteras National Seashore for an overnight fishing trip. We observed the high tide mark and set up camp above. Nothing bitting but was having a great night by the campfire. Started falling asleep (no tent just sleeping bags under a tarp) next thing we know a wave came crashing over the campfire. We scramble and get our gear all moved then went to move the truck (water is about 10 feet from the back) and it won't start, dead battery. Sh** sh** Sh** we're clear out on the point in the middle of the night and the tide is getting closer and closer. Called the Park Ranger and he said he can't get to us because the tide goes all the way up to the grass and he can't drive on the precious grass so we are cut off. Tide is now only feet from the truck and it's now raining. Called the Coast Guard and they said they would try and send a boat but wasn't sure if they could. Now I"m really flipping out because the water is now under the rear bumber and as its coming in it's washing the sand out so there is a big drop off under my rear bumber. I had all about givin up when the Ranger we first talked to called us back and said he has a jumper box and is walking down the beach. So I run as hard as I could and get back to the truck just as the water was about to touch the tire. Jumper box worked and I got it moved just in time, thank god for the Ranger that walked in a down poor to save my ass. Haven't camped on the beach since and I don't go anywhere without my jumper box.

Where do you go to in the mountains? Me and the wife go to the Linville Gorge area about 5-6 times a year, it's only 1.5hrs from the house. Got me an '02 for my DD so now I'm setting my '98 up for camping. Plan on having the gear stay in the truck so we can just jump in, hit the store on the way and be at the camp site on the spure of the moment.

Linville Gorge, actually. My dad has a house in Banner Elk, I have a younger brother and sister that live there. My sister goes to App and my brother goes to whatever community college is around there. I haven't been to the Gorge since last summer, but I love going in the wintertime. I've just been too busy over the past several months, and will probably continue to be too busy, to really make it out there. Maybe in the summer.

As soon as our youngest gets threw High School (another 4yrs) we plan on getting a modest cabin to live in up in that area, or higher up.

We've been camping under Table Rock lately, found a stone road at the bottom of the park just above Morganton that leads up to Table Rock. About 3/4 the way up there is a rough logging road that takes us back into the woods and the campsite opens up with a view of Table Rock and a really nice view down into the valley bellow, it's an awsome site sitting by a campfire. It's hard to get to without a truck so nobody goes there.

Just the two of us this time so we slept in the back

You know its funny... I've always said car camping was for *******... but then again, I never really had a car to go car camping with. I had the Jeep for about a year and a half, but it was mainly for work travel, I was a field service engineer and my territory was the eastern seaboard, and I never took it camping. Mudding a couple times, but not camping. As I look at your pictures I think... how cool, you know. Because every time I go camping, I plan extensively, marking trails and sometimes cutting my own, just to get where there is no one else. So I have to pack and hike, sometime 10-12 miles into the back-country just to be alone. Viola... el Ex can beat a trail too, and I can carry firewood in the back instead of spending two hours finding enough dry firewood to burn through the night. And I can still be away. So thanks, exploringNC, for the great pictures and for giving me yet another notch in the "you made a good decision" belt. Now I've just got to get ball joints...
