I know this has been discussed, but I've searched the site and found that my mileage is on the low side = 12 MPG.

I'm:
Completely Stock
16" Rims
AWD
V8
4 door
26,000 miles
A/C and mix of highway / city

Some people say that cleaning the O2 sensors will help but is there anything else to look for? I just got it used and they put a new air filter on it but I haven't looked more into it. My mileage was calculated on the 1st 1/2 a tank so I'm going to let it run empty to see if it averages any higher.

I know this is an SUV, but this mileage is worse than my Durango (which was really bad). Also, my gas gauge is all over the place so (goes up or down 1/8 of a tank at random).

Help :(

Once i get below a quarter tank, the guage has a mind of its own. It doesn't like mountains.... I get all paranoid and then find out I have plenty of gas left....

I have basiacally the same truck as you, (except a ton more miles on it) and get between 16-18, driving the same...city hwy mix with A/C. I would try cleaning your MAF, new plugs/wires, basic things like this.

my gauge ALSO has a mind of its own, one time I leave the house on E. I get to the gas station, and I am at half tank. Sigh...

Mine too!

That's what I expected to get by reading the board before I bought. I'm going to see if this is covered by my extended warantee. I just don't want them to pull a fast one and try and charge me.

My gas gauge on my 5.0 is whack too. Up till about a half of tank it seems accurate but after that its up and down whenever I move. When the needle sits around E on teh last marker I freak out and fill it up and find out I had about 5 gallons left. Is there any way to get a more accurate reading with that gauge or an aftermarket gauge? I wish I really knew what was goin on in that tank....

ME TOO ON THAT GAS GUAGE. I put in a K&N filter and got 1mpg increase.

No problem on the gauge here. I get about 14-15 mpg. I used to get 16+. I suspect fuel leakage but too lazy to track it down. ;)

i have fuel leakage and i know where...it's connected to my foot. sorry had to do it guys..

Yeah my gauge is all screwed up too. Jumps around randomly. I always fill at a quarter tank because I don't trust it.

Explorers gauges are notorious for reading low when facing downhill and high when facing uphill. You will also be able to put extra gas (~ 2 gallons more than when flat) in when facing downhill and less gas (~ 2 gallons less) when facing uphill. All caused by the positioning of the tank and the location of the FP/sender in the rear of the tank.
