I've been surfing this website for a few months now and have finally decided to join.
My explorations will begin soon (hopefully) when my 5.5inch Superlift gets here.

Here in the UK, the 4X4 of choice here is the Land Rover.
I had initially planned on buying a Defender 110, but decided the cash I was to put up for it would be better suited to decking out my EX.

We'll see how this plays out. :D

How much do you think that it will take to make the Explorer the equivalant of the LR 110?

I have always wanted a 110 but they are pretty rare here in the states. If you don't mind how much was the one you were looking at?

Some of the used ones I saw online ranged from 3 to 5 thousand pounds sterling. ($4500-$7500)
I think they make great off road vehicles, but having seen them up close I prefer my Explorer with wide bucket seats and air conditioning. I'm sure that with a lift kit, gears and tires they would be comparable.

Not likely. Your explorer will likely never be able to compete against a defender 110 without some serious cash being thrown into it.

Defender 110=Built for Trailriding
Explorer=Built for getting groceries

This is not to say that you won't have just as much or fun in building your explorer up. My advice to you is to research, research, and research some more before dropping money into your buildup.

Your just flaming the off roading abilities of the X all over the place:D

J/K, your right, it takes some planning, researching, and CASH!

Money or not that is a beautiful country you have there and public transportation is great! I spent a summer taking classes at Oxford. They really didn't like it on July 4 when I was running up and down the streets yelling "The Redcoats are coming!"

:D

The 110's dont have A/C??

I like my Explorer as well, though I think it is a bit more costly to modify than a...well J**P or possibly a Land Rover. Possibly Not the LR. I dunno. I do know that finding awesome aftermarket things for the Land Rover is like finding things for a Jeep. Throw a dart and you'll find something.

It would be nice though to have a Diesel Explorer. Especially when I make the trip to South America in the Ex. (I can dream can't I)

Greetings,

Okay, the Defender is probably a more capable off-road vehicle. (that's why I was wanting one instead of a series type rover) There are a few differences between the LR and the Explorer and that's why I prefer the X.
We can get into these later...
(I do enjoy my power seats/tilt/cruise and A/C)

Besides with the current exchange rate I end up paying 1.5 times the amount in pounds. So mail ordering parts for the X is cheaper.

liquidx9, since I am in the military we get our gasoline at US prices. So luckily it's not the $1 per litre they pay in town.

Wish you all the best back home. It's been raining here for days now. (It Sucks)

well then, that makes it all the more affordable.. just curious, what branch are you in?
