I just got a recall notice from my local dealer and he says that Ford is recalling 95+ explorers for defective sway bar connections. I broke one last winter in VA playing the snow but i thought it was from assing around. anybody else seen a notice? i havent done a search yet. It is a quick fix and not too much to be worried about, in fact im going in saturday to have them swapped out.

He said that in extreme temperatures like we have in florida that they were breaking easily. when i told him that one broke in the cold of winter he said "yep that too"

I had mine fixed already.

When I got my truck in January they said that Ford was recalling the sway bar bushings and mounts. I assume that is what they did. I hope the all of the problems they were having was the tires and not the truck, believe me I take corners very gingerly.

It must have just taken you a long time to get the notice. I had mine done in March. It's a quick repair. Only takes about 10 minutes. I just walked in, showed them the notice, and 10 minutes later they were done.
BTW, one of mine had a crack running almost all the way through it when I got the notice. I went to GWNF four wheeling with it like that and it still didn't break.

good deal. i have from NC to VA and now to FL in the past 2 years so they had to track me down i guess it took em a while. So was it inferior design or material? just curious.

I had already replaced one of mine due to it snapping. I just went in and had them give me 2 new links so I could do it myself. They didn't care if I gave them the old ones so I just figured I would leave them in and use these as backups. Of course, 2 days later I found that the original one that wasn't the new sturdier design had also snapped so now I am down to one spare.

Does this recall affect '98 X's? I haven't gotten a notice.

No it was only through '96. Very early model '97s might have been affected. My '97 (mfg. 6/97) wasn't affected. The front swaybar links were thinner than the 10mm links Ford uses now so they were prone to breaking. Your '98 already has the 10mm links.

Robert, thanks. I'm always on the lookout for something Ford will replace for free.

just took mine in and it took about 20 minutes. I notice NO difference in steering/cornering but hell, better safe then sorry.

You wouldn't notice any difference in steering and cornering unless one or both of your links was broken. The link doesn't affect ride or handling unless it is gone, and then it would feel like you didn't have a front swaybar which is very noticeable.

FWIW, to confirm your comment, my '97 (built 8/96) was affected.

Yet another FWIW, I heard that if you should happen to have a front blowout and have a broken link on that side, it would severely affect your ability to steer.

it would definitely affect your ability to steer. i was experimenting with having mine diconnected when a i drove on the beach one time. it was great better articulation and it seemed to be a smoother of road ride, but when i got on the highway between the beach and home it was another story. i immediatly pput them back on. thats why quick disconnects are so desireable. i plan on getting some as soon as i can.
